GAP – Work Experience

So what exactly are GAP experiences?

We’ve teamed up with local employers to bring you GAP work experiences: a fresh approach to giving you what it takes to land a great first job. Work experience is an increasingly important step towards getting the job you want – enabling you to find a career you’ll enjoy, build up your CV and improve your skills in a real working environment.

Your GAP time will target the real skills you need for success in ways which suit you and your work experience employer – meaning you’ll be busy every time you go to work and can expect to get completely involved in projects and tasks.

Whether you have your sights set on a particular job or industry, want to keep your options open or are looking to improve particular skills, we want to line you up with the right opportunity. All our students have access to our list of GAP opportunities on the portal, giving you plenty of choice to develop your skills.

Work experience should be an adventure wherever you go and we’re here to help you get as much as possible out of your time. Do that you’ll have a great story to tell employers at interview for that all-important first job.

Why do we do it?
As part of your study programme we want you to prepare for the world of work.

Colchester Institute is a vocational college and makes this commitment to you:

  • We will help you get ready for the career you want
  • We will boost your skills to ensure that you are very employable
  • At college, we will always look to give you opportunities to use your skills in work settings to help prepare for your future job
  • We will support you in gaining actual external work experience

Yearly GAP activity
Each student will undertake 30 hours a year of GAP activity. GAP (Graduates & Professionals programme) is made up of a range of activities that you can mix and match:

  • Visits from employers and experts – taking place outside of scheduled lessons
  • Group visits to work places and employers –additional to scheduled lessons
  • Work related projects, including ‘live briefs’
  • Employment in the college’s own ‘realistic working environments’
  • Participating in college events to develop your employability skills
  • Undertaking quality work experience and placements outside of college

It is expected that the planned external Quality Work Experience will account for at least half of your annual GAP hours. Where appropriate and achievable, it can be of great value for you to exceed the target hours for both the external placement and for GAP.
