Facilities Available at CI
We are continually working to improve our resources to help you with your studies. These resources are available at The College at Braintree and the Colchester Campus and are open to all students. We’re incredibly proud of the strong sense of community among staff and students that exists across the College, with over 4,000 students studying at our main Colchester campus and many more based at our sister sites in Braintree and Clacton.
Our campuses have a fantastic range of facilities for you to enjoy – from places to relax where you can meet with friends, to dedicated study areas where you can get on with your work. There are on-site food and beverage facilities (see the Catering tab for more) so you can get a bite to eat at breakfast or lunch, and grab a coffee or cake between your classes. Our Higher Education Centre provides a great range of specialist facilities including well-equipped teaching spaces and private study areas
There are excellent facilities for students including dance and drama studios, recording studios and two iMac suites running Logic, Reason, Sibelius and Soundtrack Pro. We also have a concert hall and practice rooms for bands and orchestras. Our in-house theatre in Swinburne Hall, run by Creative Arts Live, isn’t just an ideal practice space for students of the dramatic arts – it’s also a great place to catch groundbreaking performances throughout the year.
We have a great reputation for sports and recreation at Colchester Institute and, when you see our sport and fitness facilities, you’ll understand why. With an on-site gym, and a wide range of competitive Sports opportunities, you’ll find that it’s easy to stay active across our campuses.
Colchester Institute has an extensive modern computer network with over 1,000 computers available for student use. All students have their own personal accounts with Internet access and email. The network is equipped with up-to-date word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics applications software.
In addition, some suites have specialist software available such as AutoCAD, Sage Accounting, QuarkXPress and Photoshop. There are a number of areas with high specification computers for e-learning. This type of learning is increasingly popular with students because it adds a new dimension to their course.
Our Sheepen Road campus has a specially equipped on site nursery currently owned and run by local childcare provider “Cheeky Monkeys”. This extremely large, fully equipped, nursery provides professional care for children from birth to 8 years of age, in a relaxed and happy atmosphere that is both safe and secure. The nursery will be open from 8am – 6pm, 51 weeks a year.

There are Libraries at Colchester and Braintree campuses offering a range of services. There are over 100,000 resources which include books, academic journals, DVDs, CDs, music scores and online information sources designed to support you with your studies. We also have a range of equipment for you to borrow to enhance your work, such as cameras, digital audio recorders, video cameras, microphones and CD players. As a student at Colchester Institute, you can also access resources from the Albert Sloman Library at the University of Essex. You may borrow 2 items at a time from the University Library through our inter-library loan service.

Colchester Institute provides a wide range of catering facilities for students, staff and visitors.
Whether your looking to sit down with a hot meal for lunch or you have to shoot off to a class and have no time to sit down and eat, our refectories offer tasty food at even tastier prices. If your on the move, whatever you fancy, be it a Starbucks coffee, a sandwich, a bacon roll, salad-to-go, some chips, fruit or a bit of cheeky chocolate – you’ll find the treat for you.

Breakfast: Traditional Breakfast Bar, Toast station, Porridge Bar, Fruit & Yoghurts.
Lunch: Soup Station, Jacket Bar, Home Favourites, Concept Bar, Hot snack counter, Salad Bar, Grab & Go sandwiches, boxed salads, fruit and dessert pots.

Smokin Jacks American grill menu includes chicken wings, Burgers, Hot Dogs with a variety of sides, shakes and floats.
Our familiar favourite Starbucks has received a fresh new look.
Operating times have been extended to Term time – 07:15 – 20:00 – Monday to Friday /Non Term Time – 08:00 – 14:30 Monday to Friday
Starbucks offers an array of hot Starbucks beverage options including Lattes, Cappuccinos, Mocha, syrups and hot chocolates.
Hot and cold food includes a selection of rustic sandwiches, baguettes and Panini’s, and not forgetting those impulse confectionary and complementary baked products such as pastries, muffins, cakes and cookies.
Into the evening Starbucks serves one pot hot meals, jacket potatoes, paninis and soups for those with late lessons and or evening duties.

The newly refreshed K Block kitchen has seen the introduction of the popular high street brand Costa. Students and visitors are able to purchase an array of hot Costa beverage options including all of your favourites such as Lattes, Cappuccinos, Mocha, syrups and hot chocolates.
Breakfast includes Grab & Go breakfast pots (sweet & savoury), Porridge and pastries.
Lunch sees the introduction of a Healthy Live action station, Grab & Go sandwiches, salad boxes, fruit and dessert pots.
Exciting new food concepts have recently been introduced including Pranzo Pizza, Street Food, Power Boxes and Chicken Shack.
Operating through Term time, 08:00 – 15:00, Monday to Friday.
Offering an array of hot Costa beverage options including Lattes, Cappuccinos, Mocha, syrups and hot chocolate.
Various packaged bread options including sandwiches, toasties and Panini’s, boxed salads, pasta pots, power boxes, as well as confectionery and complementary baked products.
Colchester Campus and The College at Braintree, Church Lane Campus have fully equipped gyms and sports halls on-site.
At the Colchester campus students are able to access a multi-gym during term time for free. The gym is equipped with cardio vascular and resistance machines as well as free weights area. All students who wish to use the gym will need to attend an induction with one of our fully trained fitness instructors which is bookable at the College’s main reception.
The Common Room in Colchester has a friendly atmosphere, with music, pool table, games consoles, table tennis and a seating area with two flat-screen TVs. It is the ideal place to meet up between classes and during lunch breaks. There is also a Quiet Common Room where students can study with access to PCs.
For Higher Education students there is also common room situated in the HE building along with a dedicated Learning Centre. The Student Union office is situated by the Common Room and is the hub of the Students’ Union. Students can come here for accommodation help, information activities for students, learner representation as well as NUS Extra cards.
The College at Clacton has a Student Common Room with TV and pool table. The College at Braintree also has a designated common room area which has recently been refurbished, with a pool table, TV, games consoles and comfy seating.
