Information Technology Facilities

Colchester Institute has an extensive modern computer network with over 1,000 computers available for student use. All students have their own personal accounts with Internet access and email. The network is equipped with up-to-date word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics applications software.

In addition, some suites have specialist software available such as AutoCAD, Sage Accounting, QuarkXPress and Photoshop. There are a number of areas with high specification computers for e-learning. This type of learning is increasingly popular with students because it adds a new dimension to their course.

Childcare Facilities

Our Sheepen Road campus has a specially equipped on site nursery currently owned and run by local childcare provider “Cheeky Monkeys”. This extremely large, fully equipped, nursery provides professional care for children from birth to 8 years of age, in a relaxed and happy atmosphere that is both safe and secure. The nursery will be open from 8am – 6pm,  51 weeks a year.

Sports and Leisure Facilities

Colchester Campus and The College at Braintree, Church Lane Campus have fully equipped gyms and sports halls on-site.

At the Colchester campus students are able to access a multi-gym during term time for free. The gym is equipped with cardio vascular and resistance machines as well as free weights area. All students who wish to use the gym will need to attend an induction with one of our fully trained fitness instructors which is bookable at the College’s main reception.

The Common Room in Colchester has a friendly atmosphere, with music, pool table, games consoles, table tennis and a seating area with two flat-screen TVs. It is the ideal place to meet up between classes and during lunch breaks. There is also a Quiet Common Room where students can study with access to PCs.

For Higher Education students there is also common room situated in the HE building along with a dedicated Learning Centre. The Student Union office is situated by the Common Room and is the hub of the Students’ Union. Students can come here for accommodation help, information activities for students, learner representation as well as NUS Extra cards.

The College at Clacton has a Student Common Room with TV and pool table. The College at Braintree also has a designated common room area which has recently been refurbished, with a pool table, TV, games consoles and comfy seating.

Catering Facilities

Colchester Institute provides a wide range of catering facilities for students, staff and visitors.

Whether your looking to sit down with a hot meal for lunch or you have to shoot off to a class and have no time to sit down and eat, our three refectories offer tasty food at even tastier prices. If your on the move, whatever you fancy, be it a Starbucks coffee, a sandwich, a bacon roll, salad-to-go, some chips, fruit or a bit of cheeky chocolate – you’ll find the treat for you.

For a quiet lunch or break, our delightfully quirky cafe 55 Degrees offers a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.  A wide choice of hot drinks and snacks are available, including crumpets, muffins and bagels. Popular in the winter for a warming bowl of soup or a comforting hot chocolate with cream & marshmallows.

Celebrity chef, Gary Rhodes is patron of our two fantastic restaurants: The Colne Bistro and The Balkerne Restaurant.They are open to the public five days a week and offer delicious, five star meals at great value.

Officially opened by its patron, Gary Rhodes, in October 2002, our multi-million pound purpose-built Centre for Hospitality and Food Studies provides excellent facilities and training for hospitality students and aims to give them a realistic sense of what it is like to work in the hospitality industry.
