Adult GCSEs (English Language and Maths)

We offer a GCSE maths resit course over 32 weeks for those aged 19 and over.  This is a part-time course consisting of one 2-hour classroom-based session per week with a subject specialist tutor, and learners can undertake both GCSE Maths and English at the same time. Students are then expected to engage in self-study outside the classroom.

If you are over the age of 19 and studying a vocational course on a full-time basis, GCSE maths and English can be studied as part of your study programme.

If you are aged between 16 and 18 years old you will study English and Maths as part of your main full-time study programme.

Functional Skills Development in English, Maths and ICT

Colchester Institute offers Functional Skills courses in English and Maths for adult (19+) learners. These programmes provide learning opportunities ranging from Entry Level to Level 2 qualifications, and all our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Courses are designed to build confidence, aid career development or to help you get back into work.

To support individuals to successfully complete their English and/or mathematic qualifications we offer functional skills via a number of methods to suit your learning style.

For those looking to attend fixed sessions, there are options to study weekly in the classroom at our Colchester Campus or over zoom. Those looking to learn at their own pace can study through our Adult Skills Centres, either independently online or in our Learning Shops, where teachers are on hand to support you along the way. If you wish, you can continue to work independently from home to gain your qualifications more quickly.

What is Multiply?

Free and flexible workshops to help with the cost of living

In partnership with Essex County Council, Colchester Institute are delivering Multiply, which aims to support people aged 19 and over to improve their numeracy skills and gain maths qualifications up to GCSE grades 4 to 9 or A* to C.

Multiply seeks to address the crucial skills gap in Essex, where adult numeracy ranks lower when compared to the national average. It supports ECC’s broader ambition of helping Essex residents to increase their skills and to reduce barriers for disadvantaged groups.

Multiply will help you to feel more confident using numbers at work or in everyday life. Learning at a pace that suits you, Multiply offers short, flexible learning opportunities of around six hours.
