Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Level 2 Apprenticeship

From keeping us warm at the cinema to keeping blood at the right temperature for lifesaving operations, air conditioning and refrigeration are fundamental to our lives. The course is aimed at students aged 16 or over who wish to complete a level 2 apprenticeship in refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems.

The Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Level 2 Apprenticeship qualifications are intended for those involved with the installation, commissioning, servicing and maintenance of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems. This will equip learners with skills and knowledge to support a career in this sector. The delivery of learning is done through theory and practical sessions at Colchester institute combined with work based evidence gathered in a portfolio.

Course Content

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Level 2 Apprenticeship course content:

The course combines developing your practical and theoretical skills at College, together with experience gained in the workplace. The course includes a category 1 F Gas qualification and Level 3 electrical theory and practical unit.

How will I be assessed

There are 14 units and will be assessed practically and through written assessments together with two units completed within a work based portfolio. This will be including a minimum of two site visits.

What award will I achieve?

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in refrigeration and air conditioning. Pathway 04 for refrigeration is available.

What next?

Possible progression onto L3 NVQ and Level 4 & 5 education programmes.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have a strong interest in this area of working. Academic requirements are GCSEs at grades C and above in maths and English or Level 2 Maths and Level 2 English. Individuals that do not meet the qualification criteria can still be considered.

Start DateStarting employment as an apprentice can occur throughout the year however the start-date for attending college for training, where required, will be communicated post-employment and sign-up
Attendance1 day per week. Attendance is closely monitored by your tutor and training advisor. Excellent attendance is required in order to achieve the qualification. Personal holidays must not be taken within the college term dates.

What will this cost my Business?

Non-levy paying employers will need to contribute 10% of the maximum funding band as published by the Skills Funding Agency for the delivery of training and assessment for their apprenticeship. Levy paying employers will pay the full cost of the agreed funding band using their Digital Apprenticeship account.

Employers with less than 50 employees who are recruiting an apprentice aged 16-18 years old will not be required to pay the contribution fee.
