Students’ Union

CISU

Colchester Institute Student’s Union is an NUS affiliated organisation that runs separately from Colchester Institute. It is run by students and ex-students, both paid and voluntary, who sit on the committee for one year’s service. Our main priority is to represent all students in all matters: welfare, academic and social. Colchester Institute students aged 16 years or over are automatically members of CISU and are entitled to use union facilities, join clubs and societies, vote, and stand in Union Elections.

Facilities

Student Union facilities include a main common room with pool tables, table football machine, and table tennis. The SU office overlooks the common room and is the place to come for information on Union issues, booking places on trips, or generally giving feedback on what students would like to see happen in their Union.

We have a room specifically for FE students with facilities such as a flat screen television and Playstation3, as well as The Den which is a quiet common room for HE students, and has sofas and networked PCs. At The College at Clacton, Church Road we also have small common room with a pool table, television and table football machine, as well as a new common room at the The College at Clacton, Thomas Road.

For further information please contact the Student Union Office on (01206) 712560.

Welfare and Academic

The executive board has its very own student-elected Welfare Officer who is responsible for responding to student’s welfare-related needs, as well as coordinating health and safety related campaigns, along with supporting charities (particularly during RAG week). CISU has also set up a course representative system in which all courses have an elected peer representative to approach for course-related matters; these are addressed at regular meetings in order to facilitate changes.

Clubs and Societies

CISU currently has a number of thriving clubs including Christian Union, International Society, Games Club and Film Club. Contact the Student Union on (01206) 712560 for more information. Additionally we are very keen to here from students with ideas to start up their own club or society, and can provide the facilities to aid this.

Events

During the course of the academic year we put on a variety of trips and events for students. These include the huge ‘Freshers' Fair’ and ‘RAG Week’, as well as day trips to shopping centres, West End shows, theme parks and the Clothes Show Live (to name a few). Keep your eyes peeled for more information, or contact the CISU office.
