Level 1 City & Guilds Certificates in Construction Skills (Various Trades)

Colchester Institute is offering the opportunity to gain the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to start a career in the following construction trades: bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering and wall and floor tiling.

With a high demand for construction skills in the region, there are strong opportunities to access high earning jobs in the industry.

Who are these qualifications for?

Suitable for individuals of any age who are wanting an introduction into these construction trades and to gain skills in those areas, and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in, these qualifications provide the ideal introduction to the construction industry.

Covering essential skills, these qualifications are also suitable for budding DIY enthusiasts and those looking to undertake home improvements themselves to a professional standard.

For those with existing knowledge or in need of a refresher, this level builds upon your introductory knowledge and experience, allowing you to further develop your skills in the various trades.

No previous knowledge or experience is required.

Opportunity to gain CSCS Card
Undertaking the CSCS Green Card alongside the City & Guilds qualification can help you gain opportunities on site as a labourer, to further develop skills in the industry.

How to Apply
Bricklaying

The Level 1 course is designed to offer a learning environment with enthusiastic bricklaying instructors who will support your individual needs and enable you to achieve set goals.

Training areas are set up so that anyone, from complete novice to those needing a refresher, can maximise their potential to lay bricks to the required standard, on construction sites or domestic projects.

Basic hand skills and practical tasks include:

  • Introduction to bricklaying tools and equipment
  • Loading and setting out materials
  • Gauged mortar mixing
  • Basic trowel techniques
  • Laying mortar joints
  • Laying bricks and blocks to a line
  • Constructing corners — gauge, level and plumb
  • Various jointing, finishing and techniques

On completion of the necessary basic training, the following units can be undertaken to achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills (Bricklaying)

  • Introduction to Health and Safety in construction
  • Constructing half brick walling
  • Constructing block walling
  • Constructing cavity walls in brickwork and blockwork
  • Constructing one-brick walling

Construction site readiness training

On completion of all Level 1 units your instructor will arrange training exercises to develop your bricklaying skills and confidence, in readiness for working in the construction industry.

Exercises include:

  • Setting up corner profiles
  • Speed and accuracy training
  • Forming openings in cavity walling
  • Constructing gable walling (raking cutbrick and block)
Painting and Decorating

The Level 1 programme is designed to offer a short 6-week course within a relaxed learning environment, with enthusiastic painting and decorating tutors who will support your individual needs and enable you to achieve set goals.

Training areas are set up so that anyone, from complete novice to those needing a refresher, can maximise their potential to produce painting and decorating finishes to the required standard, on construction sites or domestic projects.

Basic hand skills and practical tasks include:

  • Introduction to painting and decorating tools and equipment
  • Preparing for decorating & finishing operations
  • Preparing surfaces
  • Removal of paint coatings from surfaces
  • Applying paint materials to surfaces

On completion of the necessary basic training, the following units can be undertaken to achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills (Painting and Decorating)

  • Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction
  • Introduction to the Construction Industry
  • Painting Techniques
  • Applying Decorative Effects
  • Painting a Panel Door
Plastering

The Level 1 course is designed to offer a learning environment with enthusiastic plastering instructors who will support your individual needs and enable you to achieve set goals.

Training areas are set up so that anyone, from complete novice to those needing a refresher, can maximise their potential to produce plaster finishes to the required standard, on construction sites or domestic projects.

Basic hand skills and practical tasks include:

  • Introduction to plastering tools and equipment
  • Loading and setting out materials
  • Gauged mortar mixing and plaster
  • Basic trowel techniques
  • Apply render coats
  • Apply plaster skim coats
  • Cutting and fixing plasterboard
  • Preparation skills

On completion of the necessary basic training, the following units can be undertaken to achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills (Plastering)

  • Introduction to Health and Safety in construction
  • Preparing background surfaces and applying render coats
  • Preparing background surfaces and applying finishing coats
  • Mixing materials and applying floating coats
  • Producing components from moulds

Construction site readiness training

On completion of all level 1 units your instructor will arrange training exercises to develop your plastering skills and confidence, in readiness for working in the construction industry.

Exercises include:

  • Angle bending and edging trims
  • Speed and accuracy training
  • Scratch coat and render top coat finishes
  • Ruling off render techniques
  • Two coats plastering technique
Wall and Floor Tiling

The Level 1 course is designed to offer a learning environment with enthusiastic instructors who will support your individual needs and enable you to achieve set goals.

Training areas are set up so that anyone, from complete novice to those needing a refresher, can maximise their potential to produce tiling finishes to the required standard, on construction sites or domestic projects.

Basic hand skills and practical tasks include:

  • Introduction to tiling tools and equipment
  • Loading and setting out materials
  • Gauged mortar mixing
  • Basic tiling techniques
  • Applying tile adhesive
  • Setting out for tiling
  • Marking and cutting tiles
  • Grouting techniques

On completion of the necessary basic training, the following units can be undertaken to achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills (Wall and Floor Tiling)

  • Introduction to Health and Safety in construction
  • Tiling a plain wall
  • Cutting and fixing decorative panels
  • Cutting and fixing tiles to wet areas
  • Tiling floors with a border

Construction site readiness training

On completion of all Level 1 units your instructor will arrange training exercises to develop your tiling skills and confidence, in readiness for working in the construction industry.

Exercises include:

  • Angle bending and edging trims
  • Speed and accuracy training
  • Cutting by hand and wet machine
  • Decorative panels
  • Mosaic tiles
  • Repairing damaged tiled areas

The information in this section applies to this course, and may not apply to other courses with different funding criteria.

You will not pay tuition fees if you are:
aged 19-24 on the 31st August 2022 and have an active Education, Health and Care Plan
aged 19-23 and are required to undertake this level 1 qualification in order to progress onto level 2, provided you have not previously achieved a level 2 qualification in any other subject (or 5 GCSEs grades 9-4) by the start of the course
over 19, unemployed and in receipt of benefits
over 19, employed and have a gross annual salary under £18,525 per annum
If you are aged 19-23 and have previously achieved a Level 2 qualification, if you do not meet the low income or unemployment criteria you will not be eligible for a fee waiver
You will not meet the low income or unemployment criteria if you:
are aged over 19 at the start of the course, unemployed and are not in receipt of benefits
are aged over 19 at the start of the course, employed and have a gross annual salary over £18,525 per annum
Therefore you will pay tuition fees
