Automotive Maintenance Level 1

The Automotive Maintenance Level 1 Diploma programme is designed for students wishing to enter into the maintenance or repair side of the motor industry. It is aimed at those who do not work within the industry and wish to gain formal qualifications through a full-time programme of study.

What Will I Learn?

The programme will provide the basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills required by potential vehicle technicians. Students successfully completing all units of study will have mastered the basic repair skills needed for work on various vehicle systems and possess an understanding of the related technology. Assessment is based on external examinations with internal assessment of practical ability.

Practical skills and knowledge are delivered by demonstration and practical assignments in the workshop. Theoretical knowledge is delivered by classroom tuition, guided assignments, ILT, and personal study. In addition to your main study programme you will also engage in activities to develop your English, Maths and employability skills.

Course Content

Automotive Maintenance Level 1 may include:

  • Health and Safety practices
  • Foundation Skills
  • Personal Social Development (PSD)
  • Mechanical
  • Light Vehicle
  • Electrical
  • Electrically Propelled Awareness

Learners are required to choose units, specific to their needs, across the listed groups above to achieve this qualification. Some units within this route are additional units, which allow learners to develop knowledge not only in Light Vehicle but other means of transport. This Light Vehicle route allows learners to have the flexibility to develop their knowledge and skills across a variety of specialist areas to prepare them for further studies and potentially enter into a job role they desire in the future.

Entry Requirements

3 GCSEs (9-1) including English and Maths (or Level 1 Functional Skills equivalent), and an interview.

Course Progression

Further study and training to level 2 is recommended. Progression to an Apprenticeship programme is also an option at level 2. Progression to Level 2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or Vehicle Inspection.

Career Opportunities

A career in the motor vehicle industry, generally at either craft or technician level. Upon achieving this qualification, we recommend learners progress onto further training and education in automotive at level 2.

Fees and Finance
