There is student and staff parking at both the Colchester and Braintree campuses, however this is limited and there is no guarantee of a space. Therefore we advise staff and students to explore alternative ways of travelling to campus where possible. Please note, there is no visitor parking available at the Sheepen Road campus, visitors should park in the nearby public pay and display car park on Sheepen Road.

Staff and students can access support and incentives such as public transport discounts to help with their journey to campus as part of our Sustainable Travel Plan.

There are a number of quiet and off road cycle routes to campus. Numerous bus services and the Colchester Park and Ride stop an 8 minute walk from Campus or a 15 minute walk from the town centre. Colchester station is a 16 minute walk away.

Travelling by Bike

Essex Pedal Power Colchester 2024
Over 700 FREE high-quality bikes will be provided to residents living in eligible postcodes within Greenstead. Everyone who receives a bike will also be provided with a helmet, lock, pump and lights, and can access free learn-to-ride and cycle confidence training sessions with qualified instructors. The Essex Pedal Power team will also support recipients to maintain their bike. Click the link below to learn more and find out if you are eligible.

Covered cycle parking can be found in various locations including outside the main reception.

The nearest bus stop to Colchester Campus is at Middleborough, approximately 8 minutes walk away. All Colchester bus services stop in the town centre, a 15 minute walk away.

Colchester Park and Ride – Located off the A12 at junction 28, buses leave every 15 minutes offering a fast journey of approximately 12 minutes to Middleborough bus stop.

DigiGo is a shared public transport service which offers on-demand or pre-bookable travel in parts of Essex. There is no fixed route or timetable, which puts you in control of your journey. DigiGo operates 7 days a week, from 6am to 10pm on weekdays and from 7am to 10pm on weekends.

Colchester station is a 16 minute walk, 10 minute cycle ride or a short bus ride from campus (alighting at Middleborough bus stop).

Travelling by Car

Sheepen Road, Colchester, CO3 3LL

If arriving via the A12 from the south take the A133 exit signposted for Colchester Central. Follow the signs for Town Centre. At the third roundabout take the fourth exit into Sheepen Road, signposted for Colchester Institute and the campus is on the left, beyond the retail park. A public car park is on the right.

If arriving via the A12 from the north or the A120 from the east (Clacton) take the A1232 exit, and follow signs for the Town Centre. At the double roundabout take the third exit onto Cowdray Avenue, signposted for Leisure World. At the second roundabout take the left hand filter lane onto Westway, signposted for Town Centre, and at the next roundabout take the fourth exit into Sheepen Road, as above.

If entering Braintree from Dunmow, Chelmsford, Witham, or Colchester turn right onto Braintree by-pass. Continue over the roundabouts and on arriving at the roundabout for Broad Road (first exit) and Sudbury, Halstead, Haverhill A1017, A131 (second exit) take the first exit into Broad Road. Continue down the hill and at the second mini roundabout turn right into Church Lane and you will find the campus on the right hand side. There are visitor and student parking areas.

Student Wi-fi (Eduroam)

Eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, international wireless (Wi-Fi) service available to all staff and students at the Colchester Institute.

eduroam allows you to:

  • Use your University username and password to gain free wireless Internet access whilst at the Colchester Campus.
  • Get free internet access with your University username and password at over 5,800 participating institutions in 60 countries.
  • Once your device is configured, seamlessly connect at participating institutions without having to re-enter your username and password.
  •  Visitors from other (eduroam participating) institutions to gain free Internet access at University Centre Colchester at Colchester Institute, using their own institutions credentials.

Devices may require some manual configuration in order to use the eduroam service for the first time

Important information before you start…

All Eduroam usernames start with your College username and finish with @Colchester.ac.uk

When setting up Eduroam, you must enter the username in the format ITAccount@colchester.ac.uk, where “ITAccount” is your College Username.

For example, if your College username is KSmith9845, your eduroam username is KSmith9845@Colchester.ac.uk for students and Kevin.Smith@colchester.ac.uk for Staff

To use eduroam at University Centre Colchester at Colchester Institute, you need to read and agree to the JANET and eduroam acceptable use policy.

By configuring your devices and signing in to eduroam, you signify your agreement to all of the below policies.

Connecting to Eduroam

Most Windows, Mac, IOS and Linux devices can be easily set up for Eduroam through the configuration tool and for mobile devices there is an APP to assist in the connection to the Eduroam wireless network.

Visit the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) and click the large blue button that says “eduroam user: download your eduroam installer”, then select your home institution.
