Vehicle Maintenance Level 2

This industry-focused course prepares learners for a career in the automotive maintenance and repair sector. Through a combination of practical workshop activities and technical knowledge, learners develop the skills, behaviours and understanding required by modern automotive employers. The programme is aligned to the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the Level 2 Autocare Technician Apprenticeship Standard and provides excellent preparation for further study, apprenticeships or employment.

What Will I Learn?

You will develop the essential knowledge and practical skills required to inspect, maintain and repair vehicles safely and effectively. The course covers routine servicing, engine systems, steering, suspension, braking systems, vehicle electrics, batteries, charging systems and air conditioning. You will also develop customer service skills, learn how to communicate technical information to customers and gain an understanding of workplace procedures, stock control and business operations.

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, the programme introduces electric and hydrogen vehicle awareness together with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Throughout the course you will complete practical tasks in realistic workshop environments, developing the professional behaviours expected of an Automotive Technician.

Course Content

Vehicle Maintenance Level 2 may include:

  • Health, safety and good housekeeping in automotive environments
  • Workplace procedures and professional behaviours
  • Customer service and sales awareness
  • Stock and resource management
  • Automotive tools, equipment and measuring devices
  • Routine vehicle inspection and servicing
  • Engine mechanical systems
  • Fuel, ignition, air intake and exhaust systems
  • Vehicle battery, charging and lighting systems
  • Steering, suspension and braking system maintenance
  • Vehicle chassis components
  • Air conditioning systems
  • Electric and hydrogen vehicle awareness and safety
  • Introduction to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Diagnostic and fault-finding techniques
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs (9-3) including English and Maths (or Level 2 Functional Skills equivalent), or satisfactory results (Merit/Distinction) in a relevant Level 1 qualification
  • Successful knowledge test
Course Progression

After completing Level 2, you could progression to a apprenticeship programme.

Career Opportunities

A career in the motor vehicle industry, generally at either craft or technician level such as Vehicle Technician, Autocare Technician, Fast Fit Technician, Service and Maintenance Technician or Fleet Maintenance roles.
