Engineering – Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Level 1/2

Students studying this pathway will learn about machining processes and the types of equipment that are used. They will learn what is meant by CAD/CAM and how it is used in the industry when using computer aided equipment over manual processes. Students shall also develop the skills needed to produce engineered components using different types of machining operations, including milling, turning and drilling. They will learn to set up and operate machines and use different techniques to check that what is produced is fit for purpose to meet quality standards.

Engineering and Manufacturing are vital to the UK economy where a variety of businesses operate in an industry that is worth over £1 trillion annually to the UK. This course develops both practical and technical skills to enable students to progress in their chosen field.

Learners will be given the opportunity to develop both their skills and knowledge to design, innovate and analyse solutions that are essential to modern day life.

What will I learn?

The Engineering – Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing) Foundation Certificate Level 1 has been specifically designed to provide an introduction to a broad base of engineering skills, knowledge and understanding. You will study engineering manufacture, maintenance, CAD and English and Maths as part of your main programme.

At Level 2 Learners will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

Level 1 Course Content

This programme has been specifically designed to provide an introduction to a broad base of mechanical engineering skills and principles to allow you to progress to a higher level study at Level 2. You will experience a range of different engineering principles and learn from ex industry experts through lectures, practical activities, group and personal tutorials. You will also engage in GEM and GAP activities to develop your English, Maths and employability skills.

Intermediate Technical Certificate – Mechanical & Manufacturing Technologies

The Engineering City and Guilds Intermediate Technical Certificate is ideal for learners wishing to develop their skills and knowledge within the engineering and manufacturing sector in order to progress to higher education (degree level) courses, apprenticeships and careers within the industry.

This course develops the essential skills and knowledge needed within the fields of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering. The core units provide a broad range of underpinning hand skills and knowledge needed to function in all industry sectors including mathematics, science, business operations and materials in the process that allows engineers to overcome a range of challenges. This pathway covers the following units:

In addition to your main study programme you will also engage in activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.

Entry Requirements

Level 1: 3 GCSEs (grades A*-G/9-1), including English and Maths, and an interview.

Level 2: 4 GCSEs (grades A*-E/9-3), including English and Maths, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 1 qualification (Merit/Distinction), and an interview. Applicants with previous experience of engineering technologies will be considered on an individual basis.

As part of your main study programme you will also engage in activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.

What Can I Do Next?

Level 1: Further education and training, for example, the Engineering Level 2 Technical Certificate in Mechanical and Manufacturing Technologies. Successful students will be able to progress to employment whilst continuing their study via the day release programme or apply for an Apprenticeship.

Level 2: Successful learners can progress onto the Advanced Technical Certificate/Diploma in Engineering or onto an Advanced Apprenticeship, which are equivalent to 2 A Levels and available in a number of industry pathways including Manufacturing, Mechanical/Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Career routes within the Engineering industry include roles within the Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Robotics and Maintenance sectors in roles such as Mechanical Engineers
