Furniture Production Level 2

The Furniture Production Diploma programme provides a broad knowledge of competence-based woodworking and furniture making skills. The course programme covers a wide range of traditional and modern skills relating to furniture manufacture.

What Will I Learn?

Practical workshop sessions are combined with class tuition and computer-aided learning to help build a portfolio of evidence. There are end of unit written assignments for each unit and practical work is designed to meet the practical requirements for these units. In addition to your main programme, you will study English and Maths. You will also engage in activities to develop your English, Maths and employability skills.

  • Design Processes in Furniture Making
  • Attaching Doors, Drawers and Fittings in Furniture Making
  • Furniture Making by Hand
  • Health and Safety within Furniture and Furnishing Making Environments
  • Timber Technology in Furniture Making
  • Planning for Career Pathways in Furniture and Furnishing Industries
  • Professional Responsibilities in Furniture and Furnishing Making Environments
  • Sustainability in the Timber Trade
  • Technical Drawings and Workshop Geometry

Practical Activities:

  • Using hand, power tools and basic machines
  • Constructing basic wood working joints – mortice and tenon to dovetails
  • Making doors and drawers
  • Basic veneering
  • Assessment: Constructing a bedside cabinet
Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs (grades A*-E/9-3), including English and Maths, or Level 1 Functional Skills equivalent, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 1 qualification, and an interview.

What Can I Do Next?

Various opportunities in cabinet making and joinery. Progression to and/or completion of NVQ Level 2 dependent on evidence submitted. Students can progress onto Higher Education to study a Foundation Degree in Furniture Design.
