The Business Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma course provides a nationally recognised and vocationally specific qualification with which to enter employment or to progress to higher education such as a degree in business and/or management or an associated specialist field. The programme of study includes a variety of types of business activity relating to marketing and includes accounting, finance, human resource management as well.
This qualification is for students who wish to prepare for a career in a specific occupational area and/or progress to degree level study at University.
A BTEC Extended Diploma is a two year programme, worth 180 credits and is equivalent to three A Levels. This programme can attract the maximum in UCAS points of 168. Achieving a D*D*D* (Triple Distinction) in a BTEC Extended Diploma is worth the same UCAS points as 3 A Levels at A*.
When searching for a university course, you’ll find the entry requirements include a minimum number of UCAS points. This will often be 112 UCAS points, although this will vary from course to course, however most universities seem to accept that 112 UCAS points are the standard for the average UK student. Universities will also assess their candidates on many different factors as part of their criteria.
College-based study consists of a combination of theory and practical activities related to the world of work. Much of the course content develops your ability to solve real problems. Subjects are mainly assessed through coursework.
Students learn through completing assignments involving investigation and analysis.
The course is delivered through workshops, practical activities and lectures and is supported through individual and group tutorials. In addition to your main study programme you will also engage in activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.
You will study the Foundation Diploma in year one, followed by the Extended Diploma in year two.
The qualification is achieved through a combination of coursework, exams and controlled assessments. All units must be passed in order to successfully achieve the full qualification.
This course offers access to a wide range of careers in business, including events and marketing. Alternatively students may find work as. Alternatively students may find work as a business advisor, project manager, general manager, investment administrator, bank manager, marketing assistant or public relations officer. Others may start their own businesses.
Can I go to University?
Yes, BTEC graduates can go on to university or start their career straight away.
Students can progress from this course on to a range of higher education programmes and professional courses including accounting, law, marketing and personnel management.
As vocational qualifications are designed in partnership with employers, universities and professional organisations, your training will enable you to develop the skills that are highly valued by employers. You’ll have the opportunity to broaden your understanding of your chosen area through work experience and placements throughout your programme.
The in-depth skills and knowledge acquired on a Level 3 vocational programme can provide the ideal preparation for progression to higher level study, such as a degree, HNC/HND or higher apprenticeship. Most colleges and universities accept vocational qualifications as fulfilling entry requirements.
The UCAS Tariff points system is used when making offers to applicants and most post-16 qualifications are allocated a total UCAS point score. The table below shows how many UCAS points the most common qualifications are worth.

The application window for full-time courses and joint apprenticeship applications starting in September 2024 opens on Monday 2nd October at 12pm.
Before submitting your online application, make sure you have got an email address which you will check frequently and which is professional and appropriate for this purpose, and use this when you create your account. Submit the application as early as possible and remember to make a note of your USERNAME and PASSWORD details! You will need these later.

If you have chosen the study programme you would like to apply for then you are almost there. We recommend that you read our handy application tips, watch our video and then make your application.
You can only apply for one full-time programme and one apprenticeship. You can do this together within the same application form, in what is known as a joint application.
Remember, you cannot study more than one core subject. For example, you would not be able to study two full-time programmes in different subjects simultaneously. You would take Plumbing or Music, not Plumbing and Music.
Your subject will be your primary qualification and forms the bulk of your programme of study.
