Colchester Sewing Bee

Based on the BBC Two reality show “The Great British Sewing Bee” where amateur sewers compete to be named “Britain’s best home sewer” the Colchester Sewing Bee will encourage you to dust off your sewing machine and start stitching!

As a beginner, this practical short course will provide you with the skills you need to explore and develop your own style and make the clothes you’ve always wanted. During the course you will learn a wide range of skills that will enable you to follow a commercial dressmaking pattern and how to use a sewing machine. You will receive step-by-step guidance in order to learn the techniques and skills you need to hone your dressmaking skills.

The course will include:

  • How to take basic body measurements
  • How to use a commercial pattern
  • Using a sewing machine skills
  • Your tutor will give you advice on a suitable simple pattern, fabric and haberdashery
  • A range of sewing skills such as seam finishes and sewing darts

Please note, you will be required to buy your own commercial pattern and fabric for your project. Fabric for samples will be included in the course cost and participants will have access to professional studios with industrial and domestic sewing machines. For the first lesson please bring along a notebook and pen and a project you would like to work on, if you have one.
