Painting and Decorating Level 1/2

Learn the trade of painting and decorating to allow you to kick start your career in the booming construction industry, or you could even start your own business. This industry recognised qualification provides a broad understanding of professional painting and decorating principles with training delivered in state-of-the-art workshops by ex industry craftsmen.

You will complete practical workshop assessments as well as computer-aided learning, providing a strong portfolio of work for gaining employment. You will also engage in activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.

What Will I Learn?

This programme of study consists of two one-year qualifications.

The Level 1 Painting and Decorating course is designed to prepare you to enter the industry in your chosen craft.

The Level 2 Diploma is designed to develop the skills and knowledge enabling you to progress your career in Painting and Decorating.

You will learn in a training environment that provides simulated conditions. Assessment is based on you showing what you can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification.

Practical sessions are combined with traditional classroom activities and computer-aided learning; these enable production of a portfolio of evidence. You will work towards passing end of unit theory tests, the practical assignments and the online test set and assessed by City and Guilds. A WorkSkills qualification will also be undertaken.

Painting and Decorating Level 1 may include:

  • Safe Working Practices in Construction
  • Information, Quantities and Communicating with Others
  • Building Methods and Construction Technology
  • Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platforms
  • Prepare Surfaces for Decoration; Apply Paint Systems by Brush and roller
  • Apply Foundation and Plain Papers
  • Produce Specialist Decorative Finishes

Painting and Decorating Level 2 may include:

  • Safe Working Practices in Construction
  • Information, Quantities and Communicating with Others
  • Building Methods and Construction Technology
  • Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platforms
  • Prepare Surfaces for Decoration; Apply Paint Systems by Brush and Roller
  • Apply Standard Papers to Walls and Ceilings
  • Produce Specialist Decorative Finishes
  • Creating and Applying Colour
Entry Requirements

Level 1:

  • 3 GCSEs (9-1), including English and Maths (or Level 1 Functional Skills equivalent)
  • An interview

Level 2 – Satisfactory completion of the Level 2 Qualification and via a progression interview.

Candidates must be deemed to have the potential and opportunity to successfully gain the qualification.

Course Progression

Level 1: Employment opportunities as a trainee painter/decorator. Further vocational training and assessment leading to NVQ Level 2.

Level 2: Further vocational training and assessment through a Apprenticeship.

Career Opportunities

Level 2: Employment opportunities as a trainee Painter and Decorator.
