Music Production Level 3 | UAL Diploma / Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production
This programme is designed to give you a solid base for work in the dynamic music industry as a creative music technician, producer, recording artist or allow progression to a higher-level course.

The course focuses on technology as a tool for the creative musician. Much of the work involves original composition and production. Each project you complete is designed to be realistic to what you would expect in industry. Colchester Institute has two digital recording studios and a large music production suite which are continually maintained and upgraded.

The emphasis of the course is on practical skills and production and musical awareness underpinned by classroom tuition, academic work and a range of extra-curricular events including workshops and demonstrations. You will complete workshops and demonstrations facilitated by current and ex-industry professionals supported by classroom sessions and extra-curricular activities including supporting community projects.

The assessment is project-based and is practical by nature, underpinned by academic work. In addition to your main programme, you will also engage in activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.

You will complete the UAL Diploma in your first year and continue to the Extended Diploma in your second year.

Course Content

Music Production Extended Diploma Level 3 Units include:

  • Sound Recording
  • Music Production
  • Audio Engineering
  • Live Sound Operation
  • Mixing and Mastering
  • Music for Media

As well as specialist units in music technology there are a number of units, such as Listening Skills and Music Theory, which are designed to facilitate students’ musical development.

Entry Requirements
  • 5 GCSEs (9-4) including English, or Level 2 Functional Skills equivalent, or satisfactory results (Merit/Distinction) in a relevant Level 2 qualification
  • An interview with a portfolio of relevant experience.

Candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate some prior experience of either music software sequencing or sound recording. This could be a portfolio of tracks they have produced either on CD/DVD or online.

What Can I Do Next?

A career in music might focus on education, composing and arranging for film, television, studio engineering, live sound engineering, producing, management and administration or on a range of opportunities in the publishing and retail sectors.

Progression to degree level courses in music technology or popular music.
