Drawing School – Art Classes at the Minories Galleries

Do you love drawing, do you enjoy the theatre?

Come and join experienced artist and teacher, Jane Frederick for an exciting fourth autumn term of the drawing course which is designed to give you a flavour of the traditional Art School workshop in a warm and relaxed environment and help you to develop your confidence in drawing from observation.

Based in the beautiful, light art studios in The Minories Art Gallery in Colchester, Jane will introduce you to new drawing and looking skills, this term she will invite you to revel in the sights and textures of the theatre- drawing objects, spaces and forms inspired by the colourful world of the stage. Adding the challenge of working on a large scale and helping you to develop innovative
mark making techniques, she will show you how to really look and understand what you are drawing as well as encouraging you to be ‘Bold, Loose and Accurate’ with your approach to

Each workshop will involve a stimulating new subject to discuss and draw and together and is suitable for complete beginners up to professional artists who may wish to develop their skills. All that is required is curiosity and a willingness to have a go and try something new! All participants will build a portfolio of works so if you are planning on applying for specialist art study in the future, this might be the course for you.

Jane Frederick has taught drawing at Colchester School of Art for over two decades and has a wealth of experience encouraging drawing development at all levels of experience. She is passionate about making drawing accessible to all and regularly runs gallery based workshops for complete beginners as well as experienced artists. Course Content

Week 1 – The dramatic stage:

Learning to draw atmospheric tonal spaces inspired by the exciting dramatic lighting of the theatre.

Week 2 – The Costume department

Exploring innovative methods to describe the sumptuous textures of theatrical costume.

Week 3 – The illuminated stage:

The challenge of drawing in colour and creating a sense of illumination and inner glow within your work.

Week 4 – The illusionary stage:

Understanding and building three dimensional drawings that demonstrate foreground, middle-ground and back-ground

Week 5 – The final curtain:

Developing skills to draw fluid, expressive velvety drapes and theatrical swags.
