Computing Level 3

The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification in Computing (Extended Certificate) is designed for post-16 students with an interest in the Digital sector. Equivalent to one A level in size, it is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills in Computing.

Who is the course for?

This qualification is for post-16 learners, who wish to work within the Digital sector. This course is about gaining both high level of academic knowledge and skills.

Course Content

Assessment will take place through a combination of externally set exams, and assignment coursework.

The qualification has four mandatory units covering the following topic areas:

  • Programming Fundamentals – Computing concepts and their application through programming and design methodologies
  • Computer Network Security and Encryption – Types and origins of security threats, relevant regulations, methods and tools to detect and prevent threats, and concepts and algorithms of encryption
  • Human-Computer Interaction – User experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design principles and their application in creating interfaces; key principles of HCI design, including meeting diverse needs of users
  • Practical Programming – Principles of computer science related to software development and their application in developing and managing a software solution.

Students will also develop the following knowledge and skills:

Applied knowledge and understanding of programming design and methodologies and principles of software development in relation to solving specific problems. How to detect and prevent different types of security threats and design user experiences and user interfaces to meet the diverse needs of users

Technical skills to create a design proposal for an accessible HCI solution to meet the requirements of a brief and develop and evaluate the solution, manage the development of a software solution to meet the requirements of a brief and transferable skills such as problem solving, creativity and innovation, written communications and taking personal responsibility.

Entry Requirements
  • 5 GCSEs (9-4) including English Language or Maths, or satisfactory results (Merit/Distinction) in a relevant Level 2 qualification plus English Language or Maths.
  • An interview.
Career Opportunities

This qualification can lead to progression to a T Level or another Level 3, Higher & Degree Apprenticeships e.g. Digital Infrastructure Engineer, Network Engineer, Applications Support Lead, Cyber Security Technologist, or employment opportunities in areas within digital support and systems such as Digital Support Technician, Infrastructure Technician, Cyber Security Technician.

Course Progression

Successful completion of this course will enable progression to other FE courses, some Universities, Apprenticeships or Employment.
