Founder of ROL Cruise Awarded Honorary Doctorate

University Centre Colchester’s class of 2025 will celebrate their graduation next week at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester.

This year, Peter Beadles, Founder of ROL Cruise and a highly experienced entrepreneurial business leader, will receive an honorary doctorate for his outstanding contributions to business, education, and the community.

Peter has been a committed Trustee of the Colchester Institute Foundation Trust (CIFT) since 2014 and served as its Chair from 2019 until last year. During this time, he brought his entrepreneurial skills, extensive business connections, and passion for education to the role, driving forward the charity’s fundraising ambitions. Most recently he helped secure a significant corporate sponsorship to support students facing financial hardship. His dedication has had a life-changing impact, enabling many learners to complete their studies in Further Education, Higher Education, and Apprenticeships despite facing financial challenges.

Alongside his educational commitments, Peter has played an active role in the local community. In 2016, he was appointed Deputy Mayor of the Cinque Port of Brightlingsea, recognising his long-standing dedication and community spirit.

Peter said, “It was a big surprise when I heard I’d been awarded an honorary Doctorate. I am very grateful to Colchester Institute and the University of East Anglia for bestowing this prestigious honour on me. This was only made possible thanks to the support of my wife Pat, my colleagues, and the many fundraising organisations I have worked with.”

Alison Andreas, Principal and Chief Executive at Colchester Institute, said: “Peter’s career is truly inspiring – spanning more than 50 years, from his early days in agriculture and motor spares through to founding ROL Cruise, now one of the UK’s largest cruises-only travel agencies. Just as impressive is the time and energy he has given back to our community through countless charities that he supports and raises funds for. It feels so fitting that his achievements and commitment are being recognised in this way. We’re really looking forward to celebrating this award with him, along with all of our University Centre Colchester graduates at next week’s ceremony.”

The ceremony will be held on Friday 26th September and will mark the graduation of over 180 individuals who have successfully completed their courses.
