Film, TV and Creative Media Level 3

This study programme is designed to equip students with the practical, organisational and analytical skills to make professional standard films, television programmes and online video content. You will learn the skills to plan, film and edit short films. You also will improve your English and Maths skills and undertake work experience by filming local companies and charities. You will also be supported in improving your job prospects in the Media Industry, whether that is via a UCAS application to a degree course or applying for work.

What Will I Learn?

Over the course of the two years you will produce films in a diverse range of genres including: music video, television advertising, documentary, YouTube film and single camera drama. The underpinning skills in effective communication, teamwork, research, analysis and organisation are developed as you produce films, coursework portfolios and seminar presentations. Some of your coursework will be submitted online through the virtual learning environment.

You will use a wide range of equipment including professional standard cameras, tripods and lighting packs. Our Creative Media facilities include Mac suites running Adobe Creative Suite with Premiere and After Effects, PC suites and production areas. The Colchester Campus includes a well equipped television studio with green-screen facility. You will also learn how to film out on location safely.

Along with the media classes, you will study English and Maths which will make you more employable and improve the quality of your media work. GCSE resit classes and Functional Skills sessions may be part of your timetable depending on your own specific needs. You will also attend group tutorials and 1-1 tutorials to support your study as well as enrichment activities such as watching films, meeting guest lecturers from the industry and making visits to film and television studios.

Entry Requirements

Normally 5 GCSEs (grades A*-C/9-4), including English and Maths, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 2 qualification (Merit/Distinction), and an interview.

What Can I Do Next?

Employment in media production in a range of roles which may include film making, advertising, marketing, television, radio and online content. Depending on your age when you start, you will either study a two year extended diploma or a one year diploma before progressing to the second year. Some students who want a top up year after A levels can apply for only the one year course. After two years, over 50% of our students apply through UCAS to a degree course where they can specialise in different areas of the Creative Industries.
