Colchester Institute has transformed its gym due to securing just under £10,000 from the Find Your Active – Places & Spaces programme, delivered by Active Essex.
The investment was made in direct response to feedback from students and staff who highlighted the need for more beginner-friendly machines and a wider range of equipment. With support from Active Essex, the College has been able to create a facility that encourages more people to get active, supporting both physical health and mental wellbeing.
Active Essex is a Physical Activity and Sport Partnership for Essex, Southend, and Thurrock, dedicated to improving health and wellbeing through physical activity. Their vision is to create an active Essex by working with local partners to make physical activity part of everyday life.
The funding has allowed the College to purchase and install new kit including a ski machine, cable machine, fixed barbells, new dumbbells, benches, an assault bike and an expanded free weights area. The upgrades have already had a noticeable impact, with students and staff praising the new facilities and an increase in gym memberships reported.
Regular physical activity is proven to boost mood, reduce stress, and build confidence. The improved facilities are helping users feel safe, supported, and motivated to try something new.
Colchester Institute offers courses in Sport and Active Leisure and Uniformed Services, which benefit directly from free access to the high-quality training facilities.
Justin Powles, Area Head of Public Services and Sport at Colchester Institute, said: “Our students deserve the best equipment and facilities to reach their full potential. Having this new kit means they can train with industry-standard equipment and be fully prepared for their future careers. We also want everyone to feel comfortable in the gym, whether they’re stepping into the space for the first time or pushing themselves to the next level.”
