Local student, Oliver Bevan, studying Graphic Design and Branding at Colchester Institute was awarded ‘Highly Commended Status’ for his submission for the Royal Ballet and Opera Design Challenge.
Students studying the Graphic Design and Branding course at the college, took part in a national, skills-based design competition that provides students the opportunity to work on a brief set by Royal Ballet’s Creative Associate David Pickering, for the ballet ‘The Winter’s Tale’.
The competition was judged by a panel from the Royal Ballet and Opera, who focused on creativity, practicality, interpretation of vision, and the design process- including research and environmental considerations. With four categories: Set Design, Costume Design, Wigs, Hair and Makeup Design, and Marketing Design, only 15 students are chosen for awards.
Oliver’s entry was on public display in the Linbury Foyer at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Oliver said, “This is a big moment for me as a graphic design and branding student. I’m proud to be highly commended by the Royal Opera House. It’s a great end to the course- and I’m excited to start at Norwich University of the Arts in September.”
Marketing Director at the Royal Ballet Opera House said, “The design makes a strong visual impact, particularly the bold black-and-white graphic crown, which captures attention. The judges noted how the image would translate well onto merchandise and other graphics.”
Heather Warren, Lecturer in Digital Graphics, at Colchester Institute said; “I’m so proud of Oliver for his fantastic work on the marketing brief. It’s great to see students jumping into opportunities like this and doing so well. It was the first time the college joined this competition, and it’s been such an incredible experience for both students and staff! Oliver has an exciting future ahead of him.”
Colchester Institute takes pride in offering students opportunities to engage in competitions, allowing them to put their skills into practice in real-world situations.
