Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment VTAA

The Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment (VTAA) recognises the equivalent of Level 3 knowledge and skills for technicians who do not hold a formal Level 3 motor vehicle qualification.

The SEG Awards Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment acts as an equivalent accreditation for technicians who wish to progress towards becoming an MOT Tester but do not hold a formal Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification. The assessment has been developed in collaboration with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and the content is mapped to the Level 3 Light Vehicle National Occupational Standards.

Who is the course for?

The VTAA is for experienced motor vehicle technicians who do not hold a relevant Level 3 qualification and wish to progress to the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing and the DVSA MOT demonstration test.

The assessment is designed to confirm that technicians have the practical skills and knowledge required to meet the pre-requisites for MOT Testing. To complete the VTAA, technicians will need to complete practical assessments and online knowledge assessments.

Course Aims

The Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment VTAA aims to:

  • demonstrate that technicians have the knowledge and skills expected of someone working at Level 3
  • enable technicians without a Level 3 qualification to enrol on an MOT Tester qualification
  • demonstrate that a technician meets the Light Vehicle Motor Vehicle Level 3 National Occupational Standards.
What are the entry requirements?

Technicians are expected to have four or more years’ full-time experience servicing and repairing the types of vehicles they wish to test.

A basic understanding of MOT Testing is recommended.

What Can I Do Next?

Achievement of the VTAA can support progression to the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing. After achieving the Level 2 MOT Testing Award, learners can apply to undertake the DVSA MOT demonstration test. Passing the demonstration test enables them to start carrying out MOT tests at approved testing stations where they are registered.

For some learners, the VTAA may also support progression to further learning, training or employment by providing recognition of their practical skills and knowledge.
