Skills Bootcamp: Plant Machinery

Colchester Institute and L Lynch Hire are working in partnership, to support Sizewell C and other projects, by offering free courses to those who wish to gain the necessary qualifications, knowledge and practical training to work in plant machinery within the construction sector.

This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to operate plant machinery safely and effectively. Participants will gain an understanding of the purpose and function of different machines, carry out pre-use and running checks, and correctly prepare equipment for both site operations and road travel. The course also covers safe travel over varying ground conditions, selecting the appropriate power modes for daily tasks, placing machines into and out of service, and understanding the correct procedures for loading and unloading machinery from a transporter.

Pathway 1: Traffic Marshall (A73) and Roller (A31)

Vehicle Marshaller (Driving Licence Not Required)

This course is designed to raise awareness of the dangers caused by moving vehicles in construction and will provide delegates with an understanding of current legislation and best practice.

Alongside raising awareness of the dangers caused by moving vehicles in construction, the course will outline the hierarchy of controlling plant and vehicle movement on site. Delegates will learn to put into practice the principles of safe movement of plant, particularly the reversing of vehicles on site.

Course Content:

  • Raise awareness of the dangers caused by moving plant.
  • Understand the current legislation and best practice.
  • Outline the hierarchy of controlling plant and vehicle movements on site.
  • Put into practice the principles of safe movement of plant, particularly reversing vehicles on site.
  • Understand organisational duties and procedures on site.

Ride on Roller

The purpose and Scope of this Standard is to provide the candidate with the knowledge to support the following:

  • Operating the machine safely and efficiently for compacting operations
  • Travelling and manoeuvring on various types of terrain and surfaces
  • Understanding the capabilities, purposes, and limitations of the machine
  • Carrying out safe working practices including shut down and isolation procedures
  • Understanding compaction requirements and material specifications
Pathway 2: Dumper (A09A) and Roller (A31)

Forward Tipping Dumper (Wheeled) (Driving Licence Required)

The purpose and Scope of this Standard is to provide the candidate with the knowledge to support the following:

  • Carrying out all checks and preparation procedures for site operators
  • Siting the machine safely and efficiently for loading and discharging
  • Travelling with and without a load on various types of terrain
  • Understanding the capabilities, purposes, and limitations of the machine
  • Understanding all safety procedures
  • Carry out safe working practices

Ride on Roller

The purpose and Scope of this Standard is to provide the candidate with the knowledge to support the following:

  • Operating the machine safely and efficiently for compacting operations
  • Travelling and manoeuvring on various types of terrain and surfaces
  • Understanding the capabilities, purposes, and limitations of the machine
  • Carrying out safe working practices including shut down and isolation procedures
  • Understanding compaction requirements and material specifications
Entry Requirements

If you meet these requirements, this course could be *free:

  • You must have a valid CSCS card (this can be achieved at Colchester Institute)
  • You will be required to undertake a drug/alcohol testing
  • Aged 19 or over
  • Live in Essex and meet residency requirements
  • Right to Work in the UK
