The IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components is designed for technicians who maintain and repair electric and hybrid vehicle high-voltage systems and components.

This qualification provides the knowledge and practical skills required to work safely on live high-voltage vehicle electrical components and associated systems. It supports technicians to develop the confidence and competence needed to diagnose, test and repair electric and hybrid vehicle systems safely and effectively.

Who is the course for?

This qualification is suitable for experienced automotive technicians who already work with, or are progressing into work with, electric and hybrid vehicles.

It is aimed at technicians who are required to diagnose, test and repair electric and hybrid vehicle high-voltage systems and components, including live high-voltage vehicle electrical components and associated systems.

Course Content

IMI Level 4 Award aims to:

  • provide technicians with advanced knowledge of electric and hybrid vehicle systems
  • develop the skills required to diagnose, test and repair high-voltage vehicle systems and components
  • support safe working practices when working on live high-voltage vehicle electrical systems
  • enable technicians to practically demonstrate their ability to repair high-voltage vehicle electrical components and systems
  • support progression towards IMI TechSafe™ recognition and professional registration
Entry Requirements

Learners should be experienced automotive technicians with strong vehicle diagnostic skills and prior knowledge of electric or hybrid vehicle systems. Learners will normally be expected to have completed a Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle qualification, or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience before undertaking this Level 4 qualification.

The qualification is particularly suitable for:

  • experienced vehicle technicians
  • diagnostic technicians
  • master technicians
  • technicians working with electric or hybrid vehicles
  • technicians who have already completed a Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle qualification, or who have equivalent knowledge and experience
Translate ICE Expertise to EV Contexts:
  • Comparative anatomy of internal combustion and electric drivetrains
  • Adaptation of chassis, suspension and collision-repair techniques for EV models
  • Understanding vehicle-to-grid and charging infrastructure impacts on aftercare
Entry Requirements
  • 3 years industry experience and an awareness of hybrid and electric vehicles.
Upon completion, delegates will receive:
  • A nationally recognised IMI Level 3 Award certificate.
  • Experience in safe EV system isolation, repair and replacement.
  • The confidence to expand their workshop’s services into the growing electric and hybrid market.
