The Qualsafe Level 4 Award in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 4) is designed for healthcare professionals and experienced pre-hospital practitioners who wish to develop advanced clinical knowledge and practical skills for working in emergency and urgent care environments.

The course builds upon existing emergency care experience and prepares learners to assess, manage and treat a wide range of medical and traumatic emergencies using evidence-based practice. It is particularly suited to those working or intending to work within ambulance services, event medical teams, security, rescue organisations, industrial response teams and other specialist emergency care roles.

Course Content

FREC 4 bridges the gap between first response and registered healthcare practice by developing advanced assessment, decision-making and patient management skills.

Learners gain the knowledge and practical ability to undertake comprehensive patient assessment, manage medical and traumatic emergencies, administer an extended range of medications within scope of practice and provide enhanced pre-hospital care until transfer to definitive treatment.

The qualification is recognised throughout the UK pre-hospital sector and is commonly used by private ambulance providers, event medical organisations, rescue services and industrial emergency response teams.

  • Comprehensive patient assessment

What learners need to bring

Learners should bring:

  • Valid photographic ID
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for practical exercises
  • Writing materials
  • Evidence of previous qualifications (if requested)

No specialist PPE or medical equipment is required, although learners may choose to bring personal clinical equipment for familiarisation where appropriate.

Pre-course learning materials may be provided before attendance.

Assessment Method

Learners are assessed throughout the course using:

  • Practical observations
  • Simulated casualty scenarios
  • Ongoing competency assessment
  • Written assessments (where required by the awarding organisation)
Entry Requirements
  • Hold the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 3) or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Be 18 years of age or over.
  • Have a good standard of spoken and written English.
  • Be physically capable of completing the practical elements of the course.
  • Ideally be working, or intending to work, within a patient-facing emergency care environment.
Course Progression

Successful completion of Qualsafe Level 4 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF), can support progression into:

  • Associate Ambulance Practitioner (where employer requirements are met)
  • Private Ambulance Services
  • Event Medical Teams
  • Industrial Emergency Response Teams
  • Rescue and Search & Rescue organisations
  • Offshore and remote medicine roles
  • Security and Close Protection medical roles
  • Further pre-hospital qualifications, including FREC 5, clinical CPD and other advanced emergency care training.
