As part of its Environmental and Sustainability Strategy 2025-2028, college leaders committed to becoming a leader and key influencer on sustainability matters within the college community and within the communities we serve, garnering support and collaboration for joint projects and gaining a reputation for ‘doing the right thing’ on all things sustainable.
To support this ambition, college leaders decided to act as a host organisation for screenings of the National Emergency Briefing – a film that brings together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence and why it we must act in the face of conditions that are worsening extreme weather, biodiversity loss, food security, health and cost of living.
The first screening was held on 28 April 2026 where local council and business leaders attended amongst an audience of 64 people to watch the film and support a panel discussion. By the end of the academic year July 2026, the College had gone on to host seven screenings for staff and local residents and eight screenings for students, improving the reach of the film which intends to better inform the public over the challenges brought by the climate and nature crisis. One screening was held at the Braintree Campus and several more external screenings are planned for the 2026-27 academic year alongside internal screenings for all college staff and students.
Gary Horne MBE, Deputy Chief Executive said “As educators we have a responsibility to ensure our college community is fully aware of the consequences of climate inaction. We welcome open and non-partisan post-screening discussions on what we can all do to mitigate the impacts of climate change and think about adaptation as climate change takes hold. We feel it is important to get as many people as possible to see this film. We grateful for the support of the NEB team in allowing us to introduce this to our students and we will do all we can to help achieve their ultimate goal of securing a national primetime TV briefing so people across the Country can start making more informed decisions.”
