Students craft benches for Essex Wildlife Trust

Carpentry students from Colchester Institute have created bespoke engraved wooden benches, now displayed at Essex Wildlife Trust’s Abbotts Hall Nature Reserve, as part of a project supporting the College’s partnership.

The benches were constructed by Level 3 Carpentry students, with support from Level 2 Painting and Decorating students who applied the stained finish. The project was made possible with the support of DeWalt, who funded all materials and provided the Employer Set Project brief. This project showcases the Colleges commitment to delivering career focused, practical education, while also supporting their Environmental and Sustainability Strategy.

In September 2025, Colchester Institute became a platinum Investor of the Essex Wildlife Trust. The Trust is the county’s leading conservation charity, dedicated to protecting wildlife and inspiring people to value and care for the natural world. Working closely with the charity supports the Colleges shared vision to deliver meaningful outcomes for wildlife conservation and sustainability.

Gary Horne MBE, Deputy Chief Executive at Colchester Institute, said, ‘It is a privilege to work closely with Essex Wildlife Trust on projects like this, which bring together education, sustainability and community impact. This project shows what Colchester Institute is all about and we are proud of our students for working hard and creating something that will be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.’

The benches now provide a welcoming place for visitors to enjoy the Abbotts Hall Nature Reserve, located in Great Wigborough. Colchester Institute will continue to support Essex Wildlife Trust through its ongoing partnership, helping to create opportunities for students and staff that are mutually beneficial.
