Activities organised by students

The year begins with Freshers' Week, which provides opportunities to mix with local students from all centres in the College. This includes parties, concerts, barbeques and other activities. Later in September there is a ‘Welcome Party' just for EFL and other International students. The party is a fantastic opportunity to make friends with international students on other courses and bond with your classmates.

There are further International parties just before Christmas and nights out in Colchester town organised by the students themselves. Other International evening events include pub quiz nights, bowling and trips to the theatre and cinema.

Together with the EFL department and the University of Essex Travelling Society, we organise a number of Saturday excursions each year. These have included visits to London, Cambridge, Oxford, Bath and Stonehenge. A small charge is made for the coach.

As a Colchester Institute student you will be able to join activities organised by the University of Essex Students’ Union. These include dance clubs (very popular with our EFL students) and concerts featuring well-known bands. The University is approximately three miles from the College and can be reached by bus or taxi.

Other activities organised by the Society:

  • Weekend activities such as a barbecue in Clacton on Sea, group-day at spa and pools
  • International Night – a party organised by international students for international students. They normally take place at Bar 10 in the town centre.
  • Salsa dancing classes and Latin Experience nights out where you can practise your newly learnt moves.

We are still planning to have:

  • Language buddy-ups (buddy up with a person who would like to learn your language and practise your English with them)
  • T-shirts and jumpers with the society’s logo
