UCC University Centre Colchester at Colchester Institute offers introductory and in-service teacher training programmes to enable you to develop the relevant skills, experience and professional knowledge.
Our courses are delivered by tutors who are experienced practitioners from various subject specialist backgrounds and their professional expertise is valued by our students. We offer a supportive and stimulating environment for those working towards the specialist qualification for adult numeracy teachers.
Programmes combine theory and practice based studies, enabling students to develop the relevant skills and experience to enhance their professional knowledge and career progression.

The purpose of this course is to give students an insight into the world of Education. It will explore educational differences within the United Kingdom and Internationally as well as allowing students to examine pedagogy and andragogy in context. The course will also explore the impacts of governments and governmental legislation on education and how the socio-economic climate influences the needs of education. Typical progression routes after the course could include social work, youth work, employment in the education sector, PGCE or Masters Level study.
This course is designed to give a more in depth examination of the Education sector and also to allow experienced educators to prepare for middle management whilst working at a Masters Level.
The aim is to give a more in-depth look at the world of education and the forces that act upon it whilst enabling students to examine and critically review their own experiences/practice before embarking on a major piece of research. Typical progression routes after the course could include middle management of a school, senior administrator within the Education Sector as well as PhD or EdD level study. (This course is being developed in consultation with the Association of Secondary Head Teachers, Essex).
Certificate in Education (PGCE & Cert Ed)
Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) (Full-time)
The full-time pre-service training programme is aimed at those who wish to teach in the lifelong learning sector (post-compulsory education). It is a professional qualification leading to eligibility for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for post-compulsory (lifelong learning sector) teachers. Trainees undertake 100 hours of teaching practice in a lifelong learning setting provided by the College. The full-time programme is taught over one year.
Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) (Part-time)
This in-service teacher training programme is aimed at new or established teachers, working in a post-compulsory education or training role, who need to gain a professional teaching qualification in the lifelong learning sector (post-compulsory education and training). The programme meets the LSIS requirements for the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). Holders of these awards may apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.
Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) (Full-time)
The full-time pre-service training programme is aimed at those who wish to teach in the lifelong learning sector (post-compulsory education). Holders of this award may apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS). Full-time trainees will undertake 100 hours of teaching practice in a lifelong learning setting provided by the College. The full-time programme is taught over one year.
Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) (Part-time)
This course provides an introduction to teaching in the lifelong learning sector. It includes Understanding Roles and Responsibilities, Planning and Preparing Sessions, Assessment, Micro Teaching Sessions, Design of a Learning Programme and Production of a Learning/Personal Development Journal. This award can either be stand alone or in preparation for the Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector).
Most learning will be carried out in group work sessions, where students will be able to learn from the experience of others and contribute their own views on what constitutes effective learning and teaching.
This course is for students looking to develop a musical career with a clear focus on teaching. The programme has a unique design that examines education in both the private and public sectors. The modular structure of the BA (Hons) in Music Education makes it possible to take some individual modules without having to enrol for the full degree programme.
This course offers a holistic approach to child development, the early years curriculum and safeguarding. It enables students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of early years both through academic and practice based studies. Our degree has proven extremely successful in preparing students for Postgraduate Graduate study at Certificate, Diploma or Masters level in education (Primary teaching), health and therapeutic pathways, and social sciences such as social work or children’s rights.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Courses
The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) – Level 5 course provides an internationally recognised initial qualification for teachers of English as a Foreign Language, validated by Trinity College, London. The course is intended for those with little or no teaching experience and provides a comprehensive practical introduction to the teaching of English. It is delivered through taught sessions, discussions, workshops, tutorials, observations and teaching practice placements within the College. A number of practical assignments will be set. Assessment is through portfolio and examinations. It is assessed internally and moderated externally.
The Trinity College Licentiate Diploma in TESOL is one of two internationally recognised Level 7 (master’s level) qualifications in EFL/ESOL teaching for experienced teachers. The advantage of the Diploma is the practical teaching element that is involved and it is listed by the British Council as a full qualification, equivalent to the Cambridge DELTA.
