Short Courses

This autumn at University Centre Colchester we will be running a series of short courses for those interested in or who would like to learn more about Composition to Media, Arranging, Mixing and Mastering.

Our School of Music is an active partner with the many creative organisations in and around Essex, working closely with The Games Hub at the Knowledge Gateway, BBC Essex and FILM Suffolk.

Each course is delivered by experienced industry professionals and courses take place in our specialist studio and workshop facilities. A UCC certificate of attendance is awarded upon completion of each course and there are no formal entry requirements other than an interest in the subject and a willingness to learn.

Introduction to Arranging 
Duration: 12 weeks
Attendance: Monday 9am-11am (contact us for alternative times)

Learn the principles for arranging for small ensembles.

This course is taught by Film Music Course Leader Mark Roberts. After a career as a recording engineer and music producer, Mark returned to music performance as a trumpet player. He is currently playing with a number of orchestras and big bands within the Essex and London areas.


Introduction to Composing for Film
Duration: 12 weeks

Learn how to sync visuals with your music and compose in Logic Pro.

This course is taught by film music composer Jason Frederick has scored features such as 101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure and television programmes such as Darcy’s Wildlife.


Session Conducting
Duration: 12 weeks
Attendance: Tuesday 3pm-4:30pm (contact us for alternative times)

Learn basic and more advanced conducting shapes of regular and irregular time signatures, how to annotate your scores, how to work with live performers by exploring player directions and conducting to click and without click.

This course is taught by film music composer Rachel James has composed music for several feature films, including Little Happiness, which was nominated at the Orange Golden Film Awards. Orchestrations include for the video game Goldeneye 007. She has conducted and recorded many times the City of Prague Philharmonic, as well as working in UK studios, such as Angel and Air Lyndhurst.


Introduction to Audio, Mixing & Mastering
Duration: 12 weeks
Attendance: Wednesday 12pm-2pm (contact us for alternative times)

Learn how to work with audio and plug-in effects, including mixing and mastering.

This course is taught by engineer Rhett Moir, who has worked for has worked for Felt Music, The Funky Junkies Music Production Company, EMI Production Music, The Bleeding Fingers Custom Music Shop and Extreme Music.


Composing for TV Series: Animation and Drama
Duration: 12 weeks

Learn how to compose for TV, everything from children’s animation shows to BBC-style dramas.

Foley & Sound Design
Duration: 12 weeks

Learn how to create a Foley soundtrack to a given stimulus.
Be introduced to Sound.
Design using synthesis and audio manipulation techniques.
