A message from the Dean of Higher Education to all new and returning students

Dear all,

Over the last few months, life has been quite different to what most of us have known previously. Like many of you, I have spent much of my time at home, working online and communicating with students and staff through emails or virtual platforms.

As we are beginning to prepare for the academic year 2020-21, it is worth remembering two things that are at the heart of University Centre Colchester’s work that will not change: small learning groups with in-person lectures/workshops, and great support from, and access to, our teaching staff. We are looking forward to being able to do this again from September 2020 onwards!

But what is likely to be with us for the foreseeable future is the need to follow government guidance on social distancing. As we plan the shape of our academic year 2020-21, we are doing so in a manner that prioritises your health and safety, yet ensures that you have the best possible academic experience at University Centre Colchester.

To help us achieve this, we have devised a flexible teaching and learning provision for all our programmes. In this plan, the teaching and learning will be a mixture of on-campus delivery and working in the digital space to supplement in-person teaching. University Centre Colchester will use this flexible teaching and learning provision for all its programmes.

This blended learning model is based on offering between 45% and 65% of the taught course elements on campus, the latter being central to University Centre Colchester’s preferred way of teaching.

The flexible teaching and learning provision includes, but is not limited to, the following delivery methods:
  • On-campus and ‘live’ online teaching;
  • In-person workshops and pre-recorded learning resources;
  • Individual tutorials and supervision, which can be on campus and/or online.
University Centre Colchester currently plans to welcome our new students from Monday 21st September, and teaching in Semester 1 will commence on Monday 28th September. Our returning students will recommence in the week beginning Monday 28th September.

Nearer the time, we will be in touch with you to confirm the detailed arrangements for the start of the academic year. In the meantime, have an enjoyable summer break, and most importantly, stay safe. My colleagues and I are very much looking forward to welcoming both new students and returning students in September.

With all good wishes,

Nils Franke
