YMCA Award in Fitness Instructing, Gym-Based Exercise Certificate Level 2

The YMCA Award Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Gym Instructor, is the entry level qualification required to gain employment as a Gym Instructor within the Health & Fitness Industry. This qualification will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills you require to work safely and effectively within a busy gym environment. The course will teach you how to screen clients, provide gym inductions, design basic training programs, and develop an understanding of how the body responds to exercise.

Who is the course for?

This qualification is aimed at anyone, including fitness and nutrition enthusiasts, bodybuilders, athletes and non experienced learners, who wants to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise.

Successful completion of this course will give 20 credits towards the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

Membership of REPs signifies that a fitness professional;

  • has met nationally agreed occupational standards
  • holds recognised and approved qualifications
  • is independently verified as being competent in the work place
  • is committed to ongoing professional development, and
  • is legally covered to practice by appropriate insurance

Entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) can lead to jobs as Gym Instructors or Aerobics teachers. Once qualified, many Level 2 qualifications offer routes into teaching different disciplines such as studio cycling, step and circuits.

What will I learn?

The YMCA Award in Fitness Instructing, Gym-Based Exercise Certificate Level 2 course is 120 hours long and based around three modules.

These are Exercise and Fitness Knowledge (50 hours), Health, Safety and Professionalism in Exercise (10 hours) and Fitness Instructing Gym Based (60 hours).

Candidates will gain exercise and fitness knowledge covering: Bones and joints, muscles and muscle actions, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and components of fitness.

Fitness Instructor Students will also cover the following topics:

  • How to plan and teach safe and effective exercise sessions
  • The principles of training
  • How to adapt exercise to suit varied fitness levels
  • How to use a range of teaching skills
  • The body’s systems and its response to exercise
  • Health and safety factors such as how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme

The course is assessed internally and an external theory exam is also set.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification; however candidates should have some awareness of using a gym or participating in group fitness instruction or exercise classes or equivalent.

What can I do next?

Successful learners can progress onto a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

Most part-time courses will start in September, however they can start at various points during the year, and some part-time courses will run more than once per academic year.
