Easter Closure and return to study

The College will be closed from Saturday 4th April to Tuesday 14th April (inclusive), there will be no work set for classroom based courses over this normal 2 week holiday period, however we will be returning to remote working on Wednesday 15th April for staff to continue to prepare online learning and resources.

UCC students and Apprentices will return to their online remote learning on Monday 20th April.

Further Education students will return to online remote learning on Wednesday 22nd April. This delay is to allow teaching staff to prepare materials for the next few weeks of online learning on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st April.

The Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification qualification will provide learners with a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in school environments.

Course Content

Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Diploma Level 3 – Course Content:

This qualification will provide learners with a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in school environments.

The units cover child and young person development, safeguarding their welfare, the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion, and supporting positive behaviour.

They also cover:

  • communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • schools as organisations including types of schools, policies and procedures and the wider environment in which they operate
  • planning, delivering, and reviewing assessment strategies to promote and support learning alongside the teacher
  • personal development and reflective practice

plus a wide range of optional units.

It is suitable for teaching assistants, learning support assistants, cover supervisors, parent support advisors or those in similar roles at Level 3 in the school environment.

Entry Requirements

It is aimed at learners working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools. Learners will need to be working or on a practical placement in a school as they need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

Personal and professional development in the current role as specialist support worker. The course offers a possible route into teacher training.

Most part-time courses will start in September, however they can start at various points during the year, and some part-time courses will run more than once per academic year.

Courses will run subject to sufficient applications being received.
