Emergency Paediatric First Aid

This qualification is ideal for learners wishing to gain the knowledge and skills required to administer effective emergency paediatric first aid. The qualification is valid for a period of three years after which point learners must retake the course. In addition, annual refresher training is strongly recommended.

Who Is The Course Aimed At

This qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to gain the knowledge and skills required to enable them to provide effective emergency paediatric first aid. It is intended for learners such as parents and relatives, pre-school or nursery staff, toddler group volunteers, childminders and nannies, au pairs and foster parents, or anyone who has to deliver first aid as part of their role in either childcare settings or a domestic environment.

HABC Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF)

The above qualification is awarded by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance and sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The RQF is a qualification framework regulated by Ofqual and CCEA Regulation. It is supported by Skills for Health, the sector skills council for the health sector. It is intended for learners such as parents and relatives, pre-school or nursery staff, toddler group volunteers, childminders and nannies, au pairs and foster parents, or anyone who has to deliver first aid as part of their role in either childcare settings or a domestic environment.

Course Content

Subjects covered include the roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider, how to provide first aid to an infant or child who is unresponsive, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automated external defibrillator. It also covers how to administer first aid to an infant or child who is choking or suffering from hypovolemic shock.

How long will it take me to achieve this qualification?
This qualification is obtained by taking a 1-day course on or off site , completing pre-course e-learning (2 hours) followed by a 6-hour classroom-based course.

How is the qualification assessed?
This qualification is assessed by the following two methods:
1. Practical assessment
Learners must demonstrate the practical first aid skills, as indicated within the HABC assessment paperwork.
2. Theory assessment
Learners must answer a series of questions as outlined within the HABC assessment paperwork.

What next?
Individuals achieving this qualification can progress onto the HABC Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid or the HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work.

Pre-requisite Knowledge/Qualifications.

Learners are required to be 18 years of age prior to certification. It is also advised that learners have a minimum of level 1 in literacy to enable them to complete the assessment.

Recommended Follow-up Courses

Individuals achieving this qualification can progress onto the HABC Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid or the HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work

First Aid at Work

This accredited qualification is ideal for those already working, or preparing to work within industry wishing to become a First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Who Is The Course Aimed At

This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to gain a nationally recognised qualification in first aid and become a first aider in their workplace. This qualification meets the requirements for training first-aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment.

Course Objectives/Key Benefits

The HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF)

Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded a HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF) Certificate.

The HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF) has been accredited by the regulators of England and Wales (Ofqual and the Welsh Government) and is part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). It is supported by Skills for Health, the Sector Skills Council for health.

Course Content

Topics covered include: the roles and responsibilities of the first aider; assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness, assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness, chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis.

In order to achieve the qualification, learners must achieve the two mandatory units:

• Emergency First Aid in the Workplace
• Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace

How is the qualification assessed?

1] Practical observation
The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.

2] Written/Oral questioning
Learners are required to answer a series of questions ensuring their understanding of the theory content is sufficient to meet the required standard. Oral questioning can be used to extract further information for these questions during the practical assessments, with the tutor documenting the responses, or when needing to supplement learners’ written responses, according to individual learners’ needs.

3] Accident Report Form
Learners are required to show evidence that they are able to complete an accident report form.

Pre-requisite Knowledge/Qualifications.

In order to register on to this qualification, learners are required to meet the following entry
requirements:
• 18 years of age or above
• It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English and maths.

Paediatric First Aid

This qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to become a paediatric first-aider in the workplace with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for learners already working or preparing to work in the industry and it meets the requirements for paediatric first aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Course Content

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 12 hours of learning, with a minimum 8 contact time in college and 4 hours on line learning

Topics covered

Topics include the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first-aider and providing first aid for an infant or a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally. The qualification also covers how to administer first aid to an infant or a child with head and spinal injuries, who is choking or suffering from anaphylaxis.

The qualification is valid for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by a practical demonstration and written/oral questioning

The qualification is assessed by:
1. Practical observation of administering paediatric first aid
2. Written questions on theory behind paediatric first aid
