Domestic Gas Foundation – Managed Learning Programme (MLP)

Our Domestic Gas Foundation course is designed for ACS Category 2 and 3 candidates wanting to enter the gas industry.

The course will provide candidates with all the theoretical knowledge they will require to pass the MLP assessments.  Along with theory based training candidates will also have the opportunity to hone their practical skills throughout the duration of the course in our first-class modern training facility.

Course Outline

BPEC has launched its Domestic and Industrial Gas Foundation Course for ACS Category 2 (applicants with relevant training / experience such as previously attaining an NVQ 2 in Plumbing) and Category 3 candidates (New entrants without relevant training / experience)

The structured programme provides the ‘off-site’ training that candidates are required to successfully complete in order to qualify to undertake ACS gas assessment at a BPEC Certification Ltd approved centre.

The objective of the course is to provide a clear and robust route to produce well trained and knowledgeable persons able to undertake safe gas work

This programme includes theoretical and practical training which is to be supplemented by relevant on the job practise under the supervision of a registered gas engineer.

Entry Requirements

It is important that prospective delegates are aware that they must have:

  1. A plumbing qualification
  2. 2. A registered gas engineer that is willing to mentor them and sign off work they have observed them completing

Once this is confirmed, they will be an interview with our course tutors before enrolment on the course.

Category 2 trainees will hold a recognised qualification in the mechanical services engineering sector (e.g. plumbing) but lack gas training and experience, while Category 3 applicants are new to the gas industry and will need more intense training.

Before acceptance on the course, potential delegates will need to provide original certificates for examination to confirm category 2 or 3 status.

What will I study?

These courses will cover; testing and purging of domestic gas installations, combustion, flues and ventilation, controls for gas appliances, gas pipework, gas industry legislation, installation of gas appliances, commissioning, servicing and maintenance of domestic gas appliances, central heating design.

Additional Information

For Category 3 delegates; the course requires 35 days in a college environment

For Category 2 delegates; the course requires 30 days in a college environment

In addition, candidates need to provide work-based evidence of ‘on the job’ training, under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered installer.

How is this course assessed?

Assessments normally consist of a combination of practical and theory examinations.

What next?

On completion of the training, portfolio and successful recommendation, candidates are issued with a BPEC Gas Foundation Certificate which will enable the candidate to make an application to undertake the domestic core gas safety (CCN1) and the central heating boilers and instantaneous water heaters (CENWAT) ACS assessments.

The ACS assessments can be undertaken at Colchester Institute.

Training Materials and Facilities

The Gas Foundation Candidate Portfolio allows candidates to record all the training they undertake as evidence of the necessary knowledge and experience to undertake the ACS assessments.

The comprehensive facilities at Colchester Institute enable a full programme of training and assessment.
