Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Level 2 Apprenticeship

Construction Operatives work on a construction site or in a public place, to given specifications, laying drainage, placing street iron works, structural concreting, laying pavements and excavating holes and trenches.

The Construction Options and Civil Engineering Level 2 Apprenticeship will help to attract and develop talent into the industry, preparing the groundwork for learners to move into a range of civil engineering occupations and provide progression to supervisory and management level in order to provide the sector with a well trained productive workforce.

City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services – Construction Operations (Construction) (6574)

This qualification is ideal for individuals who work as an operative in the construction sector, laying drainage, kerbs, channels and pavements. It also includes excavating holes and trenches and concreting. It provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate their competence in this area and gain a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services.

It covers the following specialist areas:

  • Modular paving
  • Laying kerbs and channels
  • General building operations
  • Drainage construction
  • Structural and non-structural concreting
  • General construction
  • Excavation and reinstatement

This qualification forms the competence-based element of the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Construction Civil Engineering (Level 2), pathway 1: Construction Operations.

Level 2 Certificate in Construction Operations – General Construction (6709-22)

It is for learners who work or want to work as a General Construction Operator in the Construction sector.

It allows learners to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or a career as a general construction operative.

It covers the following skills:

  • Construction site protection barriers
  • Lay domestic drainage
  • Construct foundations, slabs and paths in concrete

The qualification is a technical certificate within the Construction Civil Engineering Apprenticeship Framework.

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also complete Functional Skills in English and maths.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualification requirements however candidates should have a strong interest in the area. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. Students on this course are required to be employed in a suitable work placement with a building company.

Adult learners who have previously worked in construction e.g. as a labourer can also undertake this apprenticeship.

What can I do next?

There is not a level 3 Diploma or an advanced apprenticeship for construction operations as requirements of the occupational area are covered at this level. However, after gaining work experience there are opportunities to progress into plant operations related to construction operations and also occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas.

The aim of this framework is to attract, retain and develop talent into a range of civil engineering occupations at Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3) in Construction Civil Engineering, and provide progression to supervisory and management level, in order to provide the industry with a well trained productive workforce.

What will this cost my Business?

Non-levy paying employers will need to contribute 5% of the maximum funding band as published by the Skills Funding Agency for the delivery of training and assessment for their apprenticeship. Levy paying employers will pay the full cost of the agreed funding band using their Digital Apprenticeship account.
