International students attend Rotary Club International Students’ Evening
Students from ESOL had the honour of attending the Rotary Club International Students’ Evening on Monday 6th November 2017. The annual event was hosted by the Mayor at the Town Hall and in attendance were many international students from various educational establishments.
A number of overseas students from Colchester Institute and the University of Essex were welcomed by members of the Rotary Club, who explained the purpose of the organisation and welcomed the students to Colchester. Their spokesperson explained that Colchester has always viewed immigrants positively over the centuries and has benefited from the cultural mix that they bring.
Coincidentally, this event took place just weeks after Colchester was declared a Borough of Sanctuary. The Deputy Mayor, Mr Peter Chillingworth, with his wife the Deputy Mayoress Ann Chillingworth, also welcomed the international students and they were given a tour of the Town Hall by Mr Ian McMeekan, an official Colchester Town Guide.
Sally Bates, Head of International Development, attended the event along with her students and said: “Here at Colchester Institute, we always strongly encourage our students to attend this event, as it provides a unique cultural insight into the history and traditions of Colchester as well as providing opportunities to meet other members of the community.”
Colchester Institute ESOL student Marwan Sallouta, a refugee from Syria, said: “For me, it’s very good and I want to go again. It was good for conversation and I made new friends.”
