The Farnaby Brass Ensemble was formed in 1976 by five students at the then North East Essex Technical College Music Department – now the Colchester Institute. The group studied with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble on summer schools and benefited from coaching from Ifor James who at the time taught horn at the college.
The FBE went on to perform at music societies and festivals all over the UK as well as at major London venues such as the Barbican, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room. The group was heard on BBC Radio 2, 3 and 4 as well as recording a TV Christmas concert with Sir David Willcocks, Aled Jones and the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir.
Individual members of the FBE have had distinguished careers in music performance and education, including holding principal seats in the London orchestras, working in West End Theatre, and holding senior positions in music services.
