Additional Learning Support for Higher Education Students

If you have any kind of learning difficulty or disability, Colchester Institute has specialist staff to give you the support you need to complete your course successfully. We have specialists in literacy, numeracy and dyslexia; we also have learning support tutors to help you with your study and to work with you and your tutors to get support in exams.

We can provide specialist tuition for students with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or dyspraxia, if you have had this agreed through the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). We also offer general study skills support for all higher education students.

If you have a physical or medical condition, we can also develop a Learner Support Plan to ensure you remain healthy and safe in College.

If you wish to contact the department to discuss the support that could be available for you either on course or, if appropriate, at interview, please contact the Additional Learning Support department on (01206) 712585.

Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

The disabled students allowance is available to full-time or part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students. It provides funding for goods and services that may be needed to enable you to access your course, for example learning support and a computer with specialist software if you are dyslexic or a communication support worker if you are deaf or hearing impaired. It is not a lump sum of money given to the student.

For more information please visit www.direct.gov.uk or contact Helena Hughes in Additional Learning Support on (01206) 712585.

For students who receive DSA we can provide services such as:

  • Note takers
  • Dyslexia specialists
  • Communication support workers
  • A teacher of the deaf
  • Special arrangements for exams
