College sheds light on careers in technology

Local school pupils have been invited to attend Colchester Institute’s ‘Technology Taster’ event.

This special event, over two days, is aimed at year 9, 10 and 11 students and will provide useful information on careers and courses.

Wednesday 8th February will see, for the second year running, the ‘Women in Technology’ event. This day in particular will ensure girls can try practical activities and gather information on careers that have been traditionally dominated by males.

Steve Dale, Head of Centre for Construction, says, ‘‘It is important to show female students the vast range of careers they can go into. For example, it’s not just about bricklaying in construction, or motor vehicle repair in engineering. The options are endless. Female students are often pushed into different directions without first given them the opportunity to discover what’s out there. This event will hopefully begin to broaden their perceptions.’’
New for this year, boys will also be invited on the following day, given them the opportunity to have a go as well!
The event for girls will run on Wednesday 8th February 2012 and for boys, Thursday 9th, and students will be able to actively take part in the following areas:

  • Construction: Brickwork, Electrical Installations, Plumbing, Wood Occupations, Surveying and CAD, Painting and Decorating.
  • Engineering: Welding and Motor Vehicle
  • Music and Performing Arts: Music Technology and Technical Theatre
  • Computing and ICT: Networks

What’s more, for those looking for a new career or to learn about the different options available to them, the general public is invited to a ‘Technology Taster’ on Wednesday 8th February 2012 from 4pm-7pm. This is open to everyone. The event will take place in the Main Hall of the Colchester Campus, Sheepen Road.
