Colchester Institute is highlighting new programmes, which target the ‘Not in employment, Education or Training, (NEETs) within the Tendring area, at an event on Wednesday 7th December.

The event, to take place at the Tendring Skills Centre (part of Clacton Coastal Academy), is being used to showcase the excellent work that has taken place over the previous month, with a number of VIP guests in attendance. Guests will be served by future Apprentices and those who are currently unemployed (preparing for jobs in the hospitality industry), following their recent training with Chef lecturers from Colchester Institute.

The programme (managed by Colchester Institute) aims to inspire people to work in the hospitality industry and comprises of a Food Hygiene Certificate and the basic principles of preparing food. It runs for four weeks, throughout the year.

Lucy Brockway-Smith, Services to Business Manager at Colchester Institute, says: ‘‘The aim of the programme is to empower individuals, build their confidence and give them a good chance of finding employment afterwards. Alternatively, some will progress onto an apprenticeship programme at Colchester Institute.’’

The event will take place in the newly built Bristro at the Tendring Skills Centre.  The College is committed to using the facilities in Tendring to engage with a number of key priority groups; the unemployed and young NEETs highlighted by the government.

Case Studies

Lisa Hanney

Lisa Hanney left school at 16, without any qualifications.  Although she worked as a carer for a short while and did have a short period of work experience within catering, Lisa’s main role was as a full-time carer (for 19 years), to her father-in-law, until he sadly passed away.

Lisa has three children aged seven, nine and 15 years old.  She wanted to join the programme as she was interested in working in a school, something that would fit in with her family commitments.

Lisa has said attending the Work Club and the catering course gave her more self-confidence both in herself and in the kitchen.
