Erasmus exchanges for students on Higher Education courses
Colchester Institute has been awarded the Erasmus Charter. This means that our students taking higher education courses can apply to do part of their course in another EU country and we are able to accept students from EU institutions participating in the Erasmus scheme.
Why do an Erasmus exchange?
A period of study abroad will open up new perspectives and possibly new opportunites for you. Graphic design students from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, who spent a year in Colchester Institute in 2006-07 won the competition to design murals for Stansted Airport - a very useful addition to their CVs! You will make a network of new friends and return with experience which may give you the edge over other applicants for jobs or further courses of study.

How much does it cost?
Nothing! You will not be required to pay fees at the host institution and you even get a grant to cover your living expenses.
Who can apply?
Students can apply to do an Erasmus exchange to start any time after the first year of their course (and finish before the end of the course). You must have 'Home Student' status, i.e. you don't pay special overseas fees. If you are not sure of your status, just check with the International office.
Where can I go?
Discuss this with the Erasmus co-ordinator in your Centre. Many centres in the College have links with colleges and universities in Europe and will be able to recommend an appropriate place for you. If you have an interest in a particular country where we have no existing links we may still be able to arrange an exchange for you; start by contacting your Erasmus co-ordinator.
How long will the exchange be?
You will go for a minimum of one term and a maximum of one year.
Will I need to speak another language?
Not necessarily. It is possible to find courses taught in English in many countries in the EU. Of course, learning some of the local language will be an advantage and an additional skill to add to your CV. It may be possible to arrange language classes for you before you go.
When do I need to apply?
You should inform your Erasmus co-ordinator of your interest by the beginning of March. The formal application is made later.
