Course Description:

This course is primarily designed for students who have completed their GCSEs and are intent on pursing a career in art and design. During the year students take a broad approach to art and design and experiment with different media.

This course is taught using a mixture of practical studio activities, seminars, tutorials. lectures and personal study.

In addition, students will study at least one Functional Skill in English, maths or ICT as part of their main programme.

Course Content:

The course includes:

  • Acquiring a broad understanding of art and design, both contemporary and historical
  • A wide range of drawing skills including observational drawing
  • How to research art and design subjects
  • How to develop and realise visual ideas and own creative skills
  • The value of contextual study
  • Art and design professional practice

Entry Requirements:

Normally 5 GCSEs (grades A*-C) including English language and an art and design subject, or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design with at least one unit at merit level. Interview with a portfolio of artwork.

Career Opportunities:

We recommend that students follow this course with the Foundation Studies in Art and Design which offers specialist study in fine art, graphic design, fashion and textiles, 3D and photography. Some students elect to seek employment in the creative industries, typically at technician level.

Course Progression:

The Foundation Studies in Art and Design will prepare and guide students through the UCAS application process to progress to a degree course, such as the BA (Hons) Art and Design (Fashion/Textiles/Graphic Design) or FdA/BA (Hons) Photography at Colchester Institute.
