Course Description:

This course is primarily designed for students who have completed their GCSEs and are intent on pursuing a career in arts and design. During the first year students will take a broad approach to art and design and experiment with different media. This course will include written assignments and research through active learning, both in class and through independent learning demonstrations, group and individual tutorials.

In addition students will study at least one functional skill in English, mathematics or ICT as part of their main programme.

Course Content:

The first year of the course includes:

  • Acquiring a broad understanding of art and design, both contemporary and historical
  • A wide range of drawing skills including observational drawing
  • How to research art and design subjects
  • How to develop and realise visual ideas and own creative skills
  • The value of contextual study
  • Professional practice

At the start of the second year, you will be introduced to a range of photographic approaches and techniques that will allow you to find personal areas of interest (such as portraiture, advertising, documentary or fine art photography) which you will explore and refine. The work of key historical and contemporary practitioners in introduced and discussed, and individual research in and around photography will back up your practical skills. A professional portfolio is produced, preparing you for degree level study or employment.

Entry Requirements:

Normally 5 GCSEs (grades A*-C) including English language and an Art or Design subject, or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design with at least one unit at merit level. Interview with a portfolio of artwork.

Career Opportunities:

Employment within the creative industries.

Course Progression:

This two year programme will prepare and guide students through the UCAS application to progress to a degree course, such as the BA (Hons) Photography at Colchester Institute.
