Course Description:
An intensive practical programme allowing students to develop their creative potential. Students will explore the basic elements of art and design. The progamme covers a wide range of media and visual language in both two and three dimensions. Students will be introduced to ceramics, textiles, graphics, photography, fine art and computing along with the use of different processes through a wide range of projects. Towards the end of the year, students will be sampling more specific areas of study through more individual assignments.
This course is taught using a combination of studio activities, workshop sessions, guided assignment work, tutorials and class tuition.
In addition, students will study at least one Functional Skill in English, maths or ICT as part of their main programme.
Course Content:
The programme has a strong practical, project-based emphasis with some time devoted to contextual studies. These are compulsory units in 2D and 3D communication and optional specialist units to choose from in graphics, photography, fashion/textiles, fine art and 3D design.
Entry Requirements:
Normally a minimum of 3 GCSEs (grades A*-D) or Level 1 Diploma in a related subject. Interview with portfolio of art work and ability to communicate ideas orally as well as visually.
Career Opportunities:
This course is designed to create further education opportunities in graphic design, fashion/textiles, 3D design and fine art practices. Some students progress to employment in the varied art and design sector, initially in a junior capacity.
