Level 2 Award in Counselling Skills
Course Description:
This 12 week course aims to offer an introduction into the world of counselling, providing both education and training in counselling skills. The course is designed as a starting point for those who want to go onto a full programme of study to train as a professional counsellor. Also, the course would be ideal for people who are already working within the health and social care sector; care workers, early years practitioners, teaching assistants and support staff who would like to develop their use of counselling skills.
Course Content:
The course will teach skills that are fundamental to the processes of counselling and other helping relationships. Areas covered include:
Using counselling skills; establishing and agreeing boundaries; knowing how to establish and develop meaningful and effective relationships; understanding the importance of support when using counselling skills; understanding the meaning and importance of self awareness, through reflective practice; understanding an ethical framework and how it relates to the use of counselling skills; placing counselling skills within a contextual framework.
Entry Requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements. Applicants will have an informal telephone interview.
Assessment:
You will learn counselling skills in various ways, through lectures and tutor presentations. Experiential work will include participating in listening exercises and role-play activities. Written work consists of note taking during lectures and a weekly reflective journal. Your reflective journal will be an essential component of your learning and assessment, documenting your activities in class, but more importantly documenting your self-development.
Career Opportunities:
Somebody who has completed this course would not be able to practice as a counsellor. However, it is the ideal opportunity for those interested in becoming a counsellor to have a taste of what is required in the process of becoming a professional counsellor.
Course Progression:
After successfully completing this course candidates will have a basic understanding and experience of the type of theoretical and experiential learning expected at Diploma and Degree level of study.
