Course Description:

This course provides an education in health and social care that forms a basis for progression to undergraduate studies towards a range of careers in both the health and caring services. To enable students to meet the changing
circumstances within these sectors, individuals will acquire knowledge and skills that are transferable.
 

Vocational experience is central to the whole course and placements will occur throughout programme. Alongside
this, vocational placements are an essential vehicle for the achievement of the course aims and students will be completing up to 200 hours in a variety of settings over the two years.


Students who apply for the Extended Diploma will also have the opportunity to apply to join the Health and Social Care Career Academy. This is a national programme - Career Academies UK - and provides exceptional benefits to enhance future employment opportunities. The rest of the programme is a mix of modules that incorporate topics ranging from effective communication, safeguarding and caring for children and young people.
 

Students will have the opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way, develop Functional Skills that are highly valuable in an employment situation and gain confidence by developing independent learning skills.

Course Content:

The course comprises eight core units including:

  • Equality, Diversity and Rights
  • Developing Effective Communication
  • Development Through Life Stages
  • Psychological and Sociological Perspectives
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health, Safety and Security

Entry Requirements:

A satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced check* and excellent references. Subsidiary Diploma: Normally a minimum of 4 GCSEs (grades A*-C) including English language and three other science or humanities GCSEs, or a relevant level 2 qualification with a Merit or Distinction. Diploma: Normally a minimum of 4 GCSEs (grades A*-C) including English language and three other science or humanities GCSEs (two of the four being at grade B or above), or a relevant level 2 qualification with a Merit or Distinction. Extended Diploma: Normally a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades A*-C) including English language, maths and three other science or humanities GCSEs (two of the five being at grade B or above), or a relevant level 2 qualification with a Distinction plus English and maths GCSE at grade C or above. *Please note: There is a charge of £44 for a CRB check.

Career Opportunities:

Employment in healthcare industries, or with further study at higher level, careers in the health and social care sector such as social work, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, teaching etc. To explore varied and exciting careers in health and social care, look on the NHS Careers website.

Course Progression:

Higher education (including foundation degrees) and health and social care related professional training, for example, nursing, teaching, social work and occupational therapy.
