Course Description:

This qualification is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children’s environments.

The course comprises of 35 credits and assessment is by assignments, portfolio tasks, practical placements, lectures, tutorials and a reflective diary. The course includes Functional Skills in Communication, Application of Number and ICT; all students will be expected to study at least one Functional Skill as part of their main study of programme.

Course Content:

Practical work based training forms a large part of this training programme. Theoretical work includes the following modules of study, and several optional modules that are not listed:

  • Introduction to communication in children and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in children’s settings
  • Contribute to children’s and young people’s health and safety
  • Managing paediatric illness and injury
  • Support children and young people’s play and leisure

Entry Requirements:

Minimum of 4 GCSE grades A*-D including English language or a GNVQ Foundation (Merit) or equivalent, excellent references. Satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)* enhanced check.

Career Opportunities:

Learners can progress to the following job roles: Assistant pre-school workers Assistants in children’s centres Assistants in day nurseries, nursery schools and nursery classes in primary schools

Course Progression:

This qualification enables credits and learning to be transferred from this qualification to the Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce providing a direct progression route, excellent references must also be obtained from College and practical training placements *Please note there is a charge of £44 for a CRB check and all students must have one to progress on this course.
