Course Description:
The course focuses on developing the broad range of skills necessary for progression to work or further study at degree level in technical theatre. The qualification has been designed to meet the needs of the creative and cultural industries with particular consideration for the Sector Qualifications Strategy. The emphasis is on practical skills underpinned by theoretical understanding and industry standard health and safety practices. Much of the work will be in support of the wide range of performances in theatre, dance and music that take place each year. There will also be the opportunity to visit local and regional theatres.
In addition, students will study at least one Functional Skill in English, maths or ICT as part of their main programme.

Entry Requirements:
Normally 4 GCSEs (grades A*-C) or a level 2 qualification at merit or distinction in a related subject. All applicants will be interviewed.
Career Opportunities:
The creative and cultural industries are one of the country’s major employers. There are many opportunities in the field of production arts including stage management, sound operation, lighting design and operation, rigging and set construction. This may involve working in a theatre, an arts centre, schools and colleges, conference venues or touring.
Course Progression:
Successful students could progress directly into work or on to higher education courses such as the Foundation degree/BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre at Colchester Institute.
