Course Description:
The course focuses on technology as a tool for the creative musician. Much of the work involves original composition and production. Colchester Institute has three digital recording studios and a large computer music studio which are continually maintained and upgraded.
The emphasis is on practical skills and production and musical awareness underpinned by classroom tuition, academic work and a range of extra-curricular events including workshops and demonstrations. The assessment is project-based and is of a predominantly practical nature, underpinned by academic work.
In addition, students will study at least one Functional Skill in English, maths or ICT as part of their main programme.

- Sound Recording
- Sequencing
- Audio Engineering
- Live Sound Operation and Acoustics.
As well as specialist units in music technology there are a number of units, such as Listening Skills and Music Theory, which are designed to facilitate students’ musical development.
Entry Requirements:
Normally 5 GCSEs (grades A*- C), or a Level 2 qualification at merit or distinction in a related subject. All candidates will receive an interview and will be expected to be highly motivated, with the potential to develop a high level of music technology skills. Some experience at either music software sequencing or recording is desirable.
Career Opportunities:
A career in music might focus on education, composing and arranging for film, television, studio engineering, live sound engineering, producing, management and administration or on a range of opportunities in the publishing and retail sectors.
Course Progression:
Progression to higher education courses in music technology or popular music, such as the Foundation Degree or BA (Hons) in Popular Music at Colchester Institute.
